Barwon Health in Geelong is seeking a part-time Clinical Trials Officer to join the Geelong Cardiology Research Unit. The role combines direct patient care in clinical trials with data collection, management and coordination of trial activities.
Reporting to the Director of Cardiology Research, you will recruit patients, obtain informed consent, conduct reviews, interpret pathology results, and educate patients and staff while supporting cardiovascular outcomes through cutting-edge research.
The Geelong Cardiology Research Unit has been actively involved in the conduct of clinical trials since June 2000 and is recognised nationally and internationally for delivering high-quality clinical research and consistently exceeding recruitment targets. The unit participates in global Phase II-IV clinical trials in cardiovascular disease, alongside locally conducted research projects. Therapeutic areas include ischaemic heart disease, acute coronary syndromes, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, rhythm disturbances, peripheral vascular disease and heart failure. The service is led by Associate Professor John Amerena, Director of Cardiology Research, who has more than 25 years of clinical trials experience in Australia and internationally, and holds academic appointments with Deakin University and Monash University. He has played key leadership roles in global cardiovascular trials, including positions on international steering and endpoint committees. This part-time Clinical Trials Officer position (43 hours per fortnight) will work within a dynamic cardiology research team and report directly to the Director of the Cardiology Research Unit. The successful applicant will provide medical care to patients enrolled in clinical trials, including patient recruitment, obtaining informed consent, ongoing clinical review and management, interpretation and follow-up of pathology results, and education of patients, families and relevant staff. The role also involves data collection and management, and liaison with participants’ general practitioners to ensure continuity of care. This role offers the opportunity to combine direct patient care with cutting-edge research, supporting improved cardiovascular outcomes while working within an experienced and supportive multidisciplinary research environment. Applicants with strong interpersonal skills, clinical capability and a commitment to patient-centred care are encouraged to apply.
