Journi GmbH is seeking a backend internship candidate to join our Vienna team. You will work on real features and production systems, contributing to a high-scale photoc book platform while learning from experienced engineers.

Open to students or recent graduates with at least 32 hours/week availability, a valid EU work permit, and based in Vienna. The internship runs 4-6 months, with a start date negotiable.

• Basic to intermediate experience in backend development
• Familiarity with at least one JVM language (Java, Kotlin, or Scala)

About the internship

Join our backend team and help build the core of one of the world’s leading printing apps. As an intern, you won’t be doing “practice tasks” - you’ll work on real features and systems alongside experienced engineers, contributing to products used by real users in production!

This internship is open to students, recent graduates, or anyone looking to grow their backend skills in a production environment. We’re unable to sponsor visas, so you’ll need a valid EU work permit and to be based in Vienna. The internship requires a minimum of 32 hours per week, which means we can’t consider candidates on a student visa, as these are limited to 20 hours per week.

Please note: The internship runs for 4-6 months. We’ll agree on the start date during the process, though we’re aiming for as soon as possible.

What you’ll do

• Contribute to the Photobook software solution written in Scala, powered by Journi's own machine learning driven Layouting Algorithm

• Support the development of new features and REST APIs used by millions of users

• Collaborate closely with engineers (Frontend, Backend, Machine-Learning), product designers, and product managers

• Work on improving the performance, scalability, and reliability of our systems

• Help identify bugs, technical debt, and areas for improvement - and be part of fixing them

• Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to code reviews

• Learn how production systems are built, tested, and deployed

Your bag of tricks

• Basic to intermediate experience in backend development (through studies, internships, or personal projects)

• Familiarity with at least one JVM language (Java, Kotlin, or Scala) (No Scala experience? No problem - as long as you’re excited to learn it!)

• Understanding of REST APIs and how web applications communicate

• Basic knowledge of databases (SQL or NoSQL) and/or software algorithms

• Some exposure to Git and collaborative development workflows

• Curiosity, ownership, and a willingness to learn by doing

• Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset

• You have the right to work in the EU/Austria and are based in Vienna or open to relocating

Nice-to-haves

• Some experience with PostgreSQL, Redis

• Interest in (code) performance optimisations, genetic algorithms

• Personal or academic projects (GitHub links welcome!)

• Dedication to dive into complex code
