Job summary

POWERCHINA JEPCC in Dubai, UAE, seeks an experienced Substation Primary Design Engineer to independently perform primary electrical design for HV/EHV AIS/GIS substations.

The role requires hands-on design, calculations, and creation of SLDs, GA layouts, earthing and protection studies, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams on MENA projects. Fluency in English is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Power Engineering is required.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on HV/MV/EHV substation primary detailed design experience.
• Able to prepare design drawings and engineering calculations independently.
• Strong knowledge of AIS/GIS layouts, earthing, lightning protection, AC/DC systems and HV equipment selection.
• Proficient in AutoCAD; familiar with IEC/IEEE standards.
• Professional working proficiency in English.

Responsibilities

• Perform primary electrical detailed design for HV/EHV AIS/GIS substations.
• Prepare SLDs, GA, equipment layouts, busbar arrangements, sections and electrical clearance drawings.
• Independently perform earthing/grounding and lightning protection calculations and layouts.
• Design auxiliary transformer, AC/DC systems, battery banks and UPS systems, including sizing calculations.
• Perform 10–230kV cable selection, sizing, routing, grounding and cross‑bonding verification.
• Select HV equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, CTs, VTs, disconnectors and surge arresters.
• Prepare technical specifications, datasheets, equipment/cable schedules and BOQ/MTO.
• Coordinate with P&C, SCADA/Telecom and Civil teams.

We are seeking an experienced Substation Primary Design Engineer with strong hands‑on expertise in HV/EHV AIS/GIS substation detailed engineering.

The ideal candidate must be capable of independently performing primary electrical design, engineering calculations and preparing detailed design deliverables.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform primary electrical detailed design for HV/EHV AIS/GIS substations.
• Prepare SLDs, General Arrangement (GA), equipment layouts, busbar arrangements, sections and electrical clearance drawings.
• Independently perform earthing/grounding and lightning protection calculations and layouts.
• Design auxiliary transformer, AC/DC systems, battery banks and UPS systems, including sizing calculations.
• Perform 10–230kV cable selection, sizing, routing, grounding and cross‑bonding verification.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

• Strong knowledge of AIS/GIS layouts, earthing, lightning protection, AC/DC systems and HV equipment selection.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and familiar with IEC/IEEE standards.
• Professional working proficiency in English.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 132kV/220kV/400kV substation design experience.
• UAE/GCC substation EPC experience (DEWA, TAQA/TRANSCO, SEWA, EtihadWE).
• ETAP, CYMCAP, CYMGRD or equivalent software experience.
• Power system studies, SVG/STATCOM sizing or Solar PV/BESS/Wind substation design.

IMPORTANT – CANDIDATE SCREENING

This is a HANDS-ON DESIGN position.

Applicants must clearly specify the voltage levels, detailed engineering drawings and calculations they have personally completed.

Candidates with primarily construction, installation, testing, commissioning, design review or project management experience are not suitable.
