Job summary

POWERCHINA Jiangxi Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd - Dubai Branch is seeking a hands-on Primary Design Engineer for substations in Dubai. You will independently develop detailed electrical designs for HV/EHV AIS/GIS substations, including SLDs, GA drawings, and equipment layouts.

The role requires 5+ years of HV/MV/EHV design experience, proficiency in AutoCAD and ETAP/CYMCAP/CYMGRD, and strong English communication. UAE/EPC project exposure is a plus; immediate contribution possible.

Qualifications

• Experience with AIS/GIS layouts, grounding, lightning protection, and HV equipment selection.
• Ability to independently prepare detailed engineering drawings and calculations.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with ETAP/CYMCAP/CYMGRD or similar software.
• Good knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards.
• Professional working proficiency in English.

• Select HV equipment and prepare schedules, specs, datasheets, BOQ/MTO.
• Review vendor drawings and coordinate with protection, SCADA, civil teams.
• Provide technical support during construction, testing, and commissioning.

We are looking for an experienced Primary Design Engineer – Substations to join our engineering team in Dubai.

The ideal candidate must have strong hands‑on experience in HV/EHV AIS/GIS substation primary electrical design, with the ability to independently perform detailed engineering, prepare technical drawings, and carry out electrical design calculations.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform site surveys and technical data collection for bidding, basic design, and detailed engineering of HV/EHV AIS/GIS substations.
• Independently prepare Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), General Arrangement (GA) drawings, equipment layouts, busbar arrangements, sections, and electrical clearance drawings.
• Perform detailed engineering and calculations for auxiliary transformers, AC/DC systems, battery banks, and UPS systems.
• Conduct earthing/grounding and lightning protection calculations and prepare detailed engineering layouts.
• Perform HV cable sizing, cable grounding, and cross‑bonding calculations for 10kV–230kV cable systems.
• Select and specify HV equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, CTs, VTs/PTs, and surge arresters.
• Prepare equipment schedules, cable schedules, technical specifications, datasheets, and BOQ/MTO.
• Review vendor drawings and coordinate with Protection & Control, SCADA/Telecom, and Civil Engineering teams.
• Provide technical engineering support during construction, testing, and commissioning.

Mandatory Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of hands‑on HV/MV/EHV substation primary electrical design experience.
• Proven experience in AIS/GIS layouts, grounding, lightning protection, electrical clearances, and HV equipment selection.
• Ability to independently prepare detailed engineering drawings and perform primary electrical design calculations.
• Experience preparing primary equipment schedules and cable schedules.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with ETAP, CYMCAP, CYMGRD, or equivalent engineering software.
• Good knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards.
• Professional working proficiency in English.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in 132kV, 220kV, or 400kV AIS/GIS substations.
• UAE/GCC transmission and substation EPC project experience.
• Experience with DEWA, TAQA/TRANSCO, EtihadWE, SEWA, SEC, or other GCC utilities.
• Hands‑on experience in power system studies using ETAP, including load flow and short‑circuit analysis.
• Experience in reactive power compensation and SVG/STATCOM sizing.
• Experience in substation design associated with Solar PV, BESS, or Wind projects.

Important – Design Experience Is Mandatory

This is a hands‑on PRIMARY DESIGN position, not a site execution, installation, testing, commissioning, or project management role.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their personal involvement in preparing primary electrical design drawings and performing engineering calculations.

Shortlisted candidates will be expected to discuss and present examples of their previous design work during the technical interview, subject to confidentiality requirements.
