Context

The Rail Tunnel Inspector - Civil Works will provide hands‑on inspection support for major rail tunnel construction activities, helping project teams maintain quality, safety, and contractual compliance throughout the site execution cycle. The role covers daily inspection of tunnel works, verification of workmanship, review of testing activities, coordination with contractors and engineers, and accurate reporting to the Resident Engineer and Assistant Resident Engineer. The position supports safe progress from excavation and lining works through testing, commissioning, handover, and final close‑out documentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect rail tunnel construction activities including excavation, segmental lining, waterproofing, secondary lining, track bed preparation, and associated civil works.
  • Monitor contractor operations to confirm alignment with approved method statements, construction sequences, inspection test plans, and quality procedures.
  • Verify materials, workmanship, plant usage, equipment installation, inspection outcomes, and test results against contract requirements and rail industry standards.
  • Check that tunnel works follow approved drawings, technical specifications, railway standards, safety procedures, and environmental requirements.
  • Ensure railway‑specific safety controls are followed, including safe access and egress, permits to work, tunnel entry procedures, and worksite safety arrangements.
  • Maintain detailed daily site records covering labour, plant, construction progress, inspections, test results, site observations, and non‑conformance reports.
  • Review construction progress, quality concerns, and site non‑conformities, then report findings clearly to the Resident Engineer and Assistant Resident Engineer.
  • Assist with tunnel alignment checks, level verification, survey records, dimensional reviews, and as‑built documentation.
  • Coordinate with contractors, engineers, client representatives, QA/QC teams, HSE personnel, and technical specialists during inspections and site activities.
  • Witness testing, commissioning, handover inspections, and close‑out activities to ensure required records are properly completed.
  • Support resolution of site issues by following up on corrective actions, preventive actions, and closure of quality observations.
  • Participate in safety inspections, audits, toolbox talks, and site reviews to support strong HSE performance in tunnel working areas.
  • Review inspection requests, test documentation, quality records, and contractor submissions related to tunnel construction activities.
  • Track recurring defects, workmanship gaps, safety concerns, and construction risks that may affect quality, progress, or final handover.
  • Help maintain disciplined project documentation so tunnel inspection records remain reliable for audits, approvals, and project close‑out.
Ideal Profile
  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • 7-10 years of construction inspection experience on major rail infrastructure projects.
  • Proven site experience in tunnel works for rail, metro, underground transit, or similar infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of tunnelling methods, segmental lining, waterproofing, secondary lining, track bed works, and associated civil construction activities.
  • Good understanding of railway standards, QA/QC procedures, HSE requirements, and safe work practices in tunnel or rail environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret approved drawings, specifications, method statements, inspection test plans, survey records, and technical documents.
  • Experience coordinating with contractors, engineers, consultants, and client representatives during inspections, testing, and commissioning.
  • Strong attention to detail when checking workmanship, materials, alignment, levels, documentation, and non‑conformance items.
  • Able to prepare clear daily reports, inspection notes, site observations, test records, and handover documentation.
