Assistant Resident Engineer – TBM in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is a senior Civil Engineering opportunity with Parsons Corporation for an experienced tunnel engineer specializing in Tunnel Boring Machine construction. The role supports the supervision of metro rail tunnels, underground structures, excavation activities, segment installation, annular gap grouting, instrumentation monitoring, construction quality, and safe TBM operations throughout project delivery.

Job Details
  • Country: United Arab Emirates
  • City: Dubai
  • Industry: Civil Engineering
  • Function: Civil & Structural Engineering
  • Salary: 28000-40000 (estimated range)
  • Gender: Any
  • Nationality: Any

The Assistant Resident Engineer - TBM will support the Resident Engineer in controlling the technical, operational, contractual, and safety aspects of mechanized tunnel construction. The position requires continuous assessment of machine performance, ground response, face stability, grout pressure, excavation parameters, segment erection, and monitoring data. The engineer will coordinate closely with geotechnical, instrumentation and monitoring, structural, survey, safety, quality, and contractor teams. Effective supervision will be particularly important when the TBM advances beneath major roads, near buildings, through critical zones, or in ground conditions that may create settlement or stability risks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Resident Engineer with the supervision of TBM tunnels, underground structures, shafts, cross passages, and associated civil works.
  • Monitor daily TBM excavation activities and confirm compliance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and safety procedures.
  • Review machine operating parameters before and during each advance to reduce construction and geotechnical risks.
  • Assess excavation chamber pressure, face pressure, thrust force, cutterhead torque, penetration rate, grout pressure, and other key performance data.
  • Use TBM software and monitoring information to identify unusual trends, operational deviations, or conditions requiring corrective action.
  • Monitor annular gap grouting to verify pressure, volume, material quality, injection sequence, and complete filling behind installed rings.
  • Supervise precast segment handling, ring erection, bolt installation, gasket protection, alignment, and completed tunnel geometry.
  • Review greasing, lubrication, cutterhead intervention, maintenance, and planned equipment servicing activities.
  • Ensure safe TBM operation beneath major roads, adjacent buildings, utilities, sensitive structures, and other high-risk locations.
  • Coordinate with geotechnical and instrumentation and monitoring teams when the machine approaches critical zones.
  • Review settlement, convergence, vibration, groundwater, structural movement, and surface monitoring results.
  • Compare monitoring results with trigger levels and ensure appropriate action is taken when alerts or exceedances occur.
  • Supervise inspectors assigned to each TBM shift and provide clear technical guidance on inspection priorities.
  • Coordinate survey teams responsible for tunnel alignment, ring position, line, level, and control-point verification.
  • Review shop drawings, tunnel design proposals, technical submissions, material approvals, and construction procedures.
  • Assess contractor method statements, inspection and test plans, risk assessments, and work permits related to tunneling activities.
  • Prepare technical comments and draft responses for review by the Resident Engineer.
  • Work with design engineers to investigate and resolve structural, geotechnical, or construction issues encountered underground.
  • Provide on-site direction to contractor teams while maintaining compliance with contractual authority and communication procedures.
  • Verify concrete, steel, precast segments, grout, shotcrete, waterproofing materials, and other tunnel construction products.
  • Review laboratory reports, technical test results, acceptance sampling plans, and material compliance documentation.
  • Monitor tunnel construction sequences, contractor resources, equipment availability, shift performance, and production rates.
  • Compare actual progress with the approved construction schedule and identify potential delays or productivity constraints.
  • Check quantities and measurements of completed tunnel works for progress reporting and payment assessment.
  • Maintain accurate daily records covering TBM performance, installed rings, advance rates, delays, incidents, inspections, and site instructions.
  • Review inspectors' daily diaries and ensure records are technically accurate, detailed, and complete.
  • Prepare or contribute to weekly and monthly progress reports for the Resident Engineer and project management team.
  • Lead or participate in meetings with contractors, subcontractors, utility authorities, designers, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor implementation of tunnel-specific safety controls, emergency procedures, ventilation, access, lifting, and confined-space requirements.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and ensure immediate corrective measures are implemented.
  • Support nonconformance investigations and verify that corrective actions are technically suitable and properly closed.
  • Review as-built drawings, construction records, testing documentation, and handover files for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist with the final inspection and transfer of completed tunnel assets to operators or relevant service authorities.
Ideal Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience supervising tunnel construction and major underground infrastructure works.
  • Strong practical experience with Tunnel Boring Machine operations on metro rail, railway, utility tunnel, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Detailed understanding of TBM excavation cycles, machine parameters, face stability, advance control, and production monitoring.
  • Ability to identify operational risks through face pressure, grout injection pressure, thrust, torque, and TBM software data.
  • Experience supervising annular gap grouting, precast segment erection, ring installation, lubrication, and machine maintenance.
  • Knowledge of tunnel materials including concrete, reinforcement steel, precast segments, grout, shotcrete, waterproofing, and structural components.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical risks, settlement control, instrumentation monitoring, building protection, and critical-zone management.

  • Strong understanding of underground construction safety regulations and risk-control practices.
  • Experience supervising inspectors, surveyors, contractor engineers, and multidisciplinary site teams.
  • Proficiency in construction software, reporting systems, data analysis tools, and standard office applications.
  • Excellent English communication skills with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and formal correspondence.
  • Previous metro rail tunnel experience is highly desirable.
  • Engineering consultancy experience in the UAE or GCC region is preferred.
