Role Context This position is responsible for delivering consultant-level gastroenterology services across outpatient, inpatient, and procedural settings. The physician will evaluate patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary symptoms, perform endoscopic investigations and treatments, manage chronic digestive disorders, and coordinate care for cases requiring surgical, radiological, nutritional, or internal medicine input. The role has a direct impact on early diagnosis, complication prevention, symptom control, and continuity of care for patients with both acute and long-term digestive conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate patients presenting with gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic, and biliary disorders.
- Investigate abdominal pain, reflux, swallowing difficulties, altered bowel habits, gastrointestinal bleeding, and unexplained digestive symptoms.
- Diagnose and manage gastroesophageal reflux disease and related upper gastrointestinal conditions.
- Provide ongoing care for patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
- Manage inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn 's disease and ulcerative colitis.
- Assess patients with persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and other functional gastrointestinal complaints.
- Investigate abnormal liver function results and suspected hepatobiliary disease.
- Manage chronic liver disorders within the consultant 's approved scope of practice.
- Evaluate pancreatic conditions and determine appropriate diagnostic and treatment pathways.
- Assess gallbladder and biliary presentations and coordinate surgical referral where indicated.
- Perform upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
- Conduct gastroscopy to investigate upper digestive tract symptoms and abnormalities.
- Perform colonoscopy for diagnostic assessment, surveillance, and colorectal screening.
- Identify polyps, inflammatory changes, bleeding sources, tumors, strictures, and mucosal abnormalities during endoscopy.
- Obtain appropriate biopsies and tissue samples during endoscopic procedures.
- Perform therapeutic interventions within approved gastroenterology privileges.
- Assess patient suitability and procedural risks before endoscopy.
- Review medication use, anticoagulation status, allergies, and relevant comorbidities before invasive procedures.
- Ensure appropriate bowel preparation and pre-procedure instructions are provided.
- Monitor recovery following endoscopy and identify early procedural complications.
- Manage or elevate complications including bleeding, perforation, adverse sedation events, or post-procedure deterioration.
- Review blood tests, liver profiles, inflammatory markers, and other relevant investigations.
- Interpret gastrointestinal imaging in conjunction with radiology findings.

- Create individualized treatment plans based on disease severity, clinical findings, investigation results, and patient needs.
- Prescribe and monitor pharmacological treatment for digestive and liver conditions.

- Provide structured follow-up for chronic gastrointestinal and hepatology patients.
- Identify patients requiring referral for advanced hepatology, oncology, surgery, or other subspecialty care.
- Manage acute gastrointestinal presentations requiring inpatient consultation.
- Support hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, liver dysfunction, abdominal symptoms, or digestive complications.
- Coordinate with surgeons when operative management may be required.
- Work with radiologists on complex diagnostic assessment and procedural planning.
- Collaborate with dietitians to address nutrition-related aspects of gastrointestinal disease.

- MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized for professional practice in Dubai.
- Board Certification or Fellowship in Gastroenterology.

- Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialization experience.
