Role Context

The Consultant Gastroenterologist provides specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and procedural care for patients with diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary system, and related digestive structures. The role combines outpatient consultation, inpatient management, endoscopic intervention, and long-term follow-up for both common and complex gastrointestinal conditions. The consultant has a direct impact on early diagnosis, symptom control, cancer detection, complication prevention, and timely therapeutic intervention. Close collaboration with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, and other specialists supports coordinated care for patients whose conditions require multidisciplinary management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess patients presenting with acute and chronic gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Diagnose and manage disorders affecting the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, and biliary system.
  • Conduct detailed clinical evaluations supported by appropriate diagnostic testing.
  • Develop evidence-based treatment plans according to diagnosis, severity, and individual patient requirements.
  • Provide specialist outpatient gastroenterology consultations.
  • Deliver inpatient gastroenterology consultation for hospitalized patients.
  • Manage gastrointestinal bleeding and other acute digestive presentations within approved clinical privileges.
  • Evaluate patients with abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, dyspepsia, reflux, and other gastrointestinal complaints.
  • Manage inflammatory and structural gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Assess hepatobiliary conditions requiring specialist medical management.
  • Interpret laboratory investigations relevant to gastrointestinal and liver disease.
  • Review radiological imaging and integrate findings into clinical decision-making.
  • Interpret endoscopic findings and determine appropriate follow-up or intervention.
  • Perform upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
  • Conduct diagnostic and surveillance colonoscopy.
  • Perform therapeutic endoscopic procedures according to training and credentialing.
  • Undertake polypectomy when clinically indicated.
  • Perform ERCP where applicable and within approved procedural privileges.
  • Identify lesions requiring biopsy or further specialist investigation.
  • Obtain appropriate tissue samples during endoscopic procedures.
  • Explain procedural indications, benefits, limitations, and potential complications.
  • Obtain informed consent before endoscopic intervention.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after gastrointestinal procedures.

Ideal Profile

The position requires an MD, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution together with specialist training in Gastroenterology. A minimum of five years of post-qualification experience in gastroenterology and endoscopy is required. The successful physician should demonstrate strong experience managing a broad range of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.
