Role Context

The Consultant - Gastroenterology and Endoscopy will provide comprehensive specialist care for adults presenting with gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and related digestive disorders. The role combines outpatient consultation, inpatient management, diagnostic interpretation, endoscopic intervention, preventive guidance, and coordinated multidisciplinary decision-making. A significant part of the position involves endoscopy, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures where clinically appropriate. The consultant will work with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, nursing teams, and other specialists to develop integrated treatment plans and improve patient outcomes across complex digestive diseases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and manage patients presenting with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions.
  • Conduct comprehensive clinical evaluations and develop evidence-based diagnostic and treatment plans.
  • Provide specialist gastroenterology consultations for both inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Perform upper gastrointestinal endoscopy according to clinical indications.
  • Conduct colonoscopy for diagnostic, surveillance, and therapeutic purposes.
  • Perform polypectomy and related endoscopic interventions when appropriate.
  • Undertake ERCP where credentialed and required by the clinical service.
  • Interpret endoscopic findings alongside imaging, laboratory investigations, and other diagnostic data.
  • Coordinate treatment for complex gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, pathologists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary discussions for patients requiring complex or combined treatment approaches.
  • Support inpatient management of acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Participate in departmental on-call coverage according to service requirements.
  • Educate patients about diagnosis, treatment options, preventive measures, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Provide clear explanations regarding endoscopic procedures, associated risks, and expected outcomes.
  • Maintain complete and accurate consultation notes, procedure reports, and treatment records.
  • Follow applicable healthcare documentation, governance, and patient safety requirements.
  • Contribute to clinical audits and departmental quality improvement programs.
  • Participate in patient safety initiatives and review opportunities for service improvement.
  • Mentor junior physicians, residents, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Support clinical education and practical training in gastroenterology and endoscopy.
  • Maintain continuing professional development and remain current with advances in digestive medicine.
  • Evaluate new gastroenterology techniques and incorporate appropriate developments into clinical practice.
Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold an MD, MBBS, or equivalent recognized medical qualification together with specialist training in Gastroenterology. Board Certification in Gastroenterology is required. A minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience in gastroenterology and endoscopy is expected. Strong candidates should demonstrate practical competence in:
