Role Context
The Consultant - Gastroenterology and ERCP will provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care for patients with complex gastrointestinal, biliary, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary disorders. A central focus of the role is independent ERCP practice, including therapeutic intervention for ductal stones, strictures, obstruction, and pancreaticobiliary disease. The consultant will also contribute to comprehensive endoscopy services, multidisciplinary decision-making, complication management, and continuous improvement of advanced gastroenterology care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for patients with gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic conditions.
- Independently perform diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP for appropriate clinical indications.
- Conduct biliary and pancreatic sphincterotomy according to procedural requirements and patient condition.
- Perform biliary and pancreatic stent placement, exchange, and removal.
- Manage bile duct stones using appropriate endoscopic extraction techniques.
- Treat benign and malignant biliary strictures through advanced therapeutic endoscopic intervention.
- Provide endoscopic management for selected pancreatic duct disorders and related complications.
- Evaluate patients carefully before advanced endoscopic procedures and determine the most appropriate intervention strategy.
- Perform upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, including gastroscopy and OGD.
- Conduct colonoscopy for diagnostic, surveillance, and therapeutic indications.
- Carry out endoscopic biopsies, polypectomy, and hemostatic procedures.
- Perform PEG placement where appropriately trained, credentialed, and clinically indicated.
- Diagnose and manage gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders, biliary disease, pancreatic conditions, and other complex GI presentations.
- Review laboratory findings, imaging, pathology, endoscopy results, and clinical history when developing treatment plans.
- Work closely with surgeons, interventional radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists involved in complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions for patients requiring coordinated medical, endoscopic, surgical, or oncological management.
- Explain procedures, alternatives, potential complications, benefits, and expected outcomes before obtaining informed consent.
- Follow strict standards for procedural safety, sedation monitoring, infection prevention, sterilization, and endoscopy unit protocols.
- Identify and manage post-endoscopic complications promptly, arranging escalation of care when required.
- Maintain accurate clinical notes, procedural reports, consent documentation, treatment plans, and follow-up records.
- Participate in clinical audits, endoscopy quality programs, research, professional education, and continuing medical development.
- Support residents, fellows, and junior physicians through clinical supervision, procedural teaching, and mentoring.
Ideal Profile
- MBBS, MBChB, MD, or an equivalent recognized medical qualification.
- Recognized postgraduate qualification in Gastroenterology or Internal Medicine with Gastroenterology specialization.
- Board Certification or an equivalent recognized specialist qualification.
- Advanced fellowship or formal training in ERCP, Therapeutic Endoscopy, or Interventional Gastroenterology is highly desirable.
- Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for appropriate consultant licensing.
- Significant consultant-level post-specialty experience in Gastroenterology.
- Strong documented experience performing ERCP independently.
- Demonstrated competence in therapeutic ERCP, including stone extraction, stenting, sphincterotomy, and management of biliary strictures.
- Advanced experience managing complex biliary and pancreatic disorders.
- Strong clinical exposure to both diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
- Previous work in a tertiary-care hospital or advanced endoscopy centre is preferred.
- Excellent technical endoscopy capability combined with sound clinical decision-making.
- Strong understanding of endoscopy-related risks, complication management, and patient safety.
- Ability to work effectively across gastroenterology, surgery, oncology, radiology, pathology, and critical care services.
- Excellent communication and counselling skills with a patient-centred approach.
