Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, surgical planning, and follow-up for breast cancer and benign breast conditions.
  • Perform breast-conserving surgery and lumpectomy with clear oncological margins and good cosmetic outcomes.
  • Apply oncoplastic techniques during breast-conserving procedures as appropriate.
  • Perform skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy when indicated.
  • Conduct sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary dissection as needed.

Role Context

The Consultant - Breast Oncoplastic Surgery will manage patients across the complete surgical pathway for breast cancer and complex benign breast disease. The role combines oncological safety with advanced reconstructive and oncoplastic principles to preserve breast appearance wherever clinically appropriate. The consultant will contribute to individualized treatment decisions, multidisciplinary cancer planning, surgical innovation, patient counselling, and long-term improvement of breast care outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, surgical planning, and follow-up for patients with breast cancer and benign breast conditions.
  • Perform breast-conserving surgery and lumpectomy using techniques designed to achieve clear oncological margins and favorable cosmetic outcomes.
  • Apply advanced oncoplastic methods during breast-conserving procedures when clinically appropriate.
  • Perform skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy according to oncological indications and patient suitability.
  • Conduct sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection for appropriate breast cancer cases.
  • Excise benign and suspicious breast lesions using evidence-based surgical techniques.
  • Manage surgically complex cases involving locally advanced, recurrent, or multifocal breast cancer.
  • Assess patients for immediate or delayed breast reconstruction and coordinate treatment with plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
  • Evaluate high-risk patients and individuals with hereditary breast cancer syndromes for appropriate surveillance or risk‑reducing surgery.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary breast cancer meetings involving breast radiology, pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, genetics, nursing, and allied specialties.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans based on imaging, pathology, tumor biology, cancer stage, patient preference, and reconstructive options.
  • Counsel patients thoroughly regarding surgical choices, potential complications, cosmetic outcomes, reconstruction pathways, recovery, and expected results.
  • Provide structured post‑operative care and promptly identify and manage wound complications, infection, seroma, lymphedema risk, and other surgical issues.
  • Maintain accurate operative notes, multidisciplinary decisions, pathology follow‑up, consent documentation, and clinical records.
  • Follow recognized standards for cancer surgery, patient safety, infection control, clinical governance, and UAE healthcare regulations.
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, service development, research, and breast cancer outcome review.
  • Support the education, supervision, and mentoring of residents, fellows, junior doctors, and clinical staff.
  • Contribute to continued development of modern breast oncology and oncoplastic surgical services.
Ideal Profile
  • MBBS, MBChB, MD, or an equivalent recognized medical degree.
  • Recognized postgraduate qualification in General Surgery, Breast Surgery, Surgical Oncology, or an equivalent specialty.
  • Board Certification or an equivalent recognized specialist qualification.
  • Fellowship or formal subspecialty training in Breast Surgery, Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, or Surgical Oncology is highly desirable.
  • Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for appropriate consultant licensing.
  • Significant post‑specialty experience at Consultant level in Breast Surgery or Breast Oncoplastic Surgery.
  • Strong recent clinical experience in breast surgical oncology and advanced oncoplastic procedures.
  • Proven expertise in breast‑conserving surgery, mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and axillary surgery.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex breast cancer cases within a tertiary‑care or comprehensive cancer environment.
  • Experience in immediate breast reconstruction or close collaboration with reconstructive and plastic surgery teams is highly desirable.
  • Essential experience working within a multidisciplinary breast cancer service.
  • Strong surgical judgment with a detailed understanding of oncological principles, breast anatomy, reconstructive planning, and cosmetic outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and counselling skills when supporting patients through complex cancer treatment decisions.
  • Academic, teaching, research, service development, or clinical leadership experience is advantageous.
