Role Context
The Consultant - Breast Surgical Oncology will manage patients throughout the breast surgery pathway, from diagnostic assessment and operative planning to definitive cancer surgery, reconstruction coordination, and postoperative surveillance. The role requires balancing oncologic safety with preservation of function and appearance while helping patients understand complex treatment choices. Multidisciplinary decision-making will be central to achieving appropriate surgical margins, timely cancer treatment, effective reconstruction planning, and strong recovery outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate patients referred with benign and malignant breast conditions.
- Assess breast masses, suspicious lesions, imaging abnormalities, and confirmed breast malignancies.
- Review mammography, ultrasound, MRI, biopsy findings, and pathology reports as part of surgical planning.
- Develop individualized surgical strategies based on disease extent, tumor characteristics, patient preference, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
- Perform breast-conserving surgery for appropriately selected patients.
- Undertake lumpectomy and related oncologic breast procedures.
- Perform mastectomy using techniques appropriate to the patient 's disease and reconstructive plan.
- Coordinate reconstructive options for patients undergoing breast cancer surgery.
- Perform reconstructive breast procedures within approved training and clinical privileges.
- Work closely with reconstructive and plastic surgery teams when complex reconstruction is required.
- Apply oncologic surgical principles to achieve appropriate disease clearance while preserving healthy tissue where possible.
- Provide operative management for selected benign breast conditions requiring surgical treatment.
- Utilize minimally invasive surgical approaches when clinically appropriate.
- Incorporate robotic-assisted surgical technology where available, indicated, and supported by appropriate credentialing.
- Provide comprehensive preoperative assessment and surgical risk evaluation.
- Explain operative options, expected outcomes, possible complications, reconstruction choices, and recovery requirements.
- Obtain informed consent following detailed patient counselling.
- Deliver consultant-level intraoperative surgical care and respond appropriately to operative complications.
- Provide structured postoperative management including wound assessment, pain control, and complication surveillance.
- Review final histopathology and determine whether further surgical management is required.
- Coordinate subsequent oncology treatment following definitive breast surgery.
- Participate in multidisciplinary breast cancer and tumor board meetings.
- Collaborate with medical oncologists regarding systemic treatment pathways.
- Work closely with breast radiologists for imaging assessment, localization, and surveillance planning.
- Coordinate with radiation oncology teams when postoperative radiotherapy is indicated.
- Collaborate with pathology specialists to correlate operative and histological findings.
- Counsel patients regarding recovery, surveillance, preventive care, and long-term breast health.
- Communicate sensitively with patients and families during cancer diagnosis and treatment decision-making.
- Maintain complete consultation, operative, consent, histopathology, and follow-up documentation.
- Ensure compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, patient safety standards, infection prevention requirements, and ethical surgical practice.
- Participate in clinical audits, surgical outcome reviews, morbidity and mortality meetings, and quality improvement.
- Contribute to development of breast surgery pathways and evidence-based clinical protocols.
- Maintain current knowledge of advances in breast oncology, reconstructive techniques, minimally invasive surgery, and surgical technology.
Ideal Profile
- Medical degree from an accredited and recognized institution.
- Board Certification in General Surgery.
- Formal specialization, fellowship, or substantial advanced training in Breast Surgery.
- Minimum 5-10 years of relevant breast surgery experience.
- Strong expertise in surgical management of breast cancer.
- Demonstrated experience treating both benign and malignant breast disease.
- Advanced competence in mastectomy and breast-conserving surgery.
- Experience with reconstructive breast procedures is required.
- Strong understanding of multidisciplinary breast oncology treatment pathways.
- Western medical education or clinical training is preferred.
- Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for appropriate consultant licensing in Dubai.
- Experience with minimally invasive surgical techniques is desirable.
- Exposure to robotic-assisted surgery is advantageous where relevant to clinical practice.
- Ability to interpret breast imaging and pathology information for operative decision-making.
- Strong preoperative and postoperative patient management skills.
- Excellent communication and surgical counselling capability.
- Fluency in Arabic, spoken and written, is essential.
- Strong English communication skills are required for multidisciplinary clinical practice.
