This subject is designed to bridge mechatronics theory with real‑world industrial practice, with a strong focus on PLCs, Ladder Logic, industrial interfaces, and a late‑session transition to MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape-based modelling and laboratory work.

The successful candidate will contribute to delivering high‑quality teaching that integrates industrial relevance with contemporary control and simulation practices.

Subject Objectives

The subject aims to:

  • Bridge mechatronics theory and industrial practice through PLCs and Ladder Logic
  • Develop understanding of industrial I/O systems and interfaces, including robotics, motor drives, directional control valves (DCVs), sensing, and vision systems
  • Implement PLC‑based control solutions for typical manufacturing tasks
  • Introduce MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape modelling and simulation, replacing prior pneumatic/hydraulic hardware content in the latter part of the session
Key Teaching Responsibilities
  • Deliver weekly lectures and tutorials for MECH470
  • Teach and assess core content including:
    • PLC fundamentals, Ladder Logic instructions, timers and counters
    • Siemens PLC platforms and industrial standards
    • Industrial I/O systems: robotics interfaces, motor drives, DCVs, vision and distance sensing
    • PLC‑based manufacturing and control applications
    • Introduction to MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape modelling and simulation, including two progressive laboratory tasks
  • Support students in applying theory to practical, industry‑aligned scenarios
  • Contribute to assessment, marking, and academic quality requirements in line with UOWD policies
  • The candidate is expected to work in accordance with the course curriculum and teaching plans, as well as take attendance and be involved in marking.
  • Offer consultation times to students outside of classroom hours
  • Liaise with subject coordinator before, during and at the end of the semester session
  • Complete grading of student work in a timely fashion, using clear rubrics, and with constructive feedback
  • Input the grades into the student interface software (SMP), and complete subject report for the end of semester (training will be provided)
  • Manage the acquisition of necessary supplies
  • Experience in using innovative approaches to teaching is also desirable
Selection criteria – Qualifications, Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills
