About the Role

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) invites applications for an Instructor to support the delivery of ENGG103, a foundational subject in materials engineering. This role focuses on tutorial and laboratory instruction, supporting students’ understanding of both materials science theory and hands‑on laboratory practice.

The successful candidate will play a key role in guiding first‑year engineering students through core concepts in materials engineering and developing their practical laboratory skills.

Subject Overview

ENGG103 introduces students to the fundamental principles of materials engineering, emphasizing the interrelationship between structure, properties, processing, and applications of engineering materials.

Core topics include:

  • Atomic structure and interatomic bonding
  • Imperfections in solids
  • Mechanical properties of metals
  • Dislocations and strengthening mechanisms
  • Failure modes: fracture and fatigue
  • Polymers and composites
  • Thermal and electrical properties
  • Ceramics
Key Teaching Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver tutorials and laboratory classes in ENGG103
  • Support student learning through explanations, demonstrations, and guided problem‑solving
  • Supervise and support laboratory sessions, including
  • Mechanical testing
  • Failure analysis
  • Assist with assessment activities including marking and feedback, in line with subject requirements
  • Ensure safe laboratory practices and adherence to university policies
  • Collaborate with the subject coordinator and teaching team
  • The candidate is expected to work in accordance with the course curriculum and teaching plans, as well as take attendance and be involved in marking.
  • Offer consultation times to students outside of classroom hours
  • Liaise with subject coordinator before, during and at the end of the semester session
  • Complete grading of student work in a timely fashion, using clear rubrics, and with constructive feedback-
  • Input the grades into the student interface software (SMP), and complete subject report for the end of semester (training will be provided)-
  • Manage the acquisition of necessary supplies
  • Experience in using innovative approaches to teaching is also desirable.
Selection criteria – Qualifications, Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills

A Master’s degree in Engineering, preferably with a Civil Engineering background

Experience teaching or supporting materials science fundamentals at undergraduate level

Demonstrated laboratory teaching competence, particularly in:

  • Mechanical testing
  • Failure analysis

Strong communication skills and an ability to engage first‑year students effectively

Prior experience teaching undergraduate engineering subjects

Familiarity with outcome‑based education and assessment practices

Ability to manage multiple tutorial and laboratory sessions efficiently

The University offers adjunct lecturers at undergraduate level a compensation of AED 6,000 per tutorial per trimester. This covers teaching, grading and providing subject consultation for students. The University is located in Knowledge Park, Dubai and has excellent teaching, learning and research facilities as well as a Library that meets international standards.
