The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) invites expressions of interest from experienced academics and industry professionals for Adjunct Instructor opportunities in Civil Engineering. Applications from professionals currently working in industry who are interested in part‑time teaching are strongly encouraged.
We are seeking passionate educators with expertise in Structural Engineering, Mechanics of Solids, Geomechanics, and Soil Mechanics to support the delivery of undergraduate engineering subjects within our accredited Civil Engineering programs.
The successful candidates will combine strong technical knowledge with effective teaching practices and an ability to connect engineering theory with real-world industry applications.
This subject covers the fundamental behaviour of engineering materials and structures, including:
Stress‑strain relationships and Hooke's Law
Axial loading and structural analysis
Shear force and bending moment analysis
Beam deflection and column buckling
Torsion and combined loading
Mohr's Circle and stress analysis
Experimental mechanics and laboratory instruction
This subject introduces students to geotechnical engineering principles, including:
Soil and rock mechanics
Soil classification and compaction
Effective stress and groundwater flow
Seepage and permeability
Settlement analysis
Shear strength of soils
Slope stability and ground behaviour
Laboratory testing and interpretation of geotechnical data
Key Responsibilities
Deliver tutorials and laboratory classes
Support student learning through explanations, demonstrations, and guided problem‑solving
Supervise and support laboratory sessions, including:
Mechanical testing
Failure analysis
Assist with assessment activities including marking and feedback, in line with subject requirements
Ensure safe laboratory practices and adherence to university policies
Collaborate with the subject coordinator and teaching team
The candidate is expected to work in accordance with the course curriculum and teaching plans, as well as take attendance and be involved in marking.
Offer consultation times to students outside of classroom hours
Liaise with subject coordinator before, during and at the end of the semester session
Complete grading of student work in a timely fashion, using clear rubrics, and with constructive feedback-
Input the grades into the student interface software (SMP), and complete subject report for the end of semester (training will be provided)-
Manage the acquisition of necessary supplies
Experience in using innovative approaches to teaching is also desirable.
Master's degree or higher in:
Civil Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering
Or a closely related discipline
2. Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Mechanics of Solids
Structural Analysis
Soil Mechanics
Geotechnical Engineering
Rock Mechanics
Foundation Engineering
Engineering Laboratory Instruction
3. Previous university‑level teaching, tutoring, laboratory instruction, or professional training experience
4. Strong communication and student engagement skills
PhD in a relevant engineering discipline
Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional registration
Industry experience within consulting, construction, infrastructure, geotechnical, or structural engineering sectors
Experience teaching engineering laboratory modules
Familiarity with outcomes‑based engineering education and accreditation requirements
The successful candidate will enjoy interaction with a professional dynamic team of highly respected educators from more than 50 different countries and exposure to students from over 100 nationalities.
The University offers adjunct lecturers at undergraduate level a compensation of AED 6,000 per tutorial per trimester. This covers teaching, grading and providing subject consultation for students. The University is located in Knowledge Park, Dubai and has excellent teaching, learning and research facilities as well as a Library that meets international standards.
Eligibility Notice: Adjunct appointments do not include visa sponsorship. Applicants must hold a valid UAE residency visa and be legally eligible to undertake part‑time employment in the UAE.
