About the Role

Our client, a prominent civil engineering firm with a strong presence in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal , is seeking an experienced Senior Transportation Engineer specializing in road design. This role is crucial for the development of major transportation infrastructure projects across the region. You will lead the design process for roads, highways, and intersections, ensuring safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of traffic engineering principles, geometric design, drainage, and materials, along with proven project management skills. Key Responsibilities

Lead the planning, design, and development of transportation infrastructure projects, including urban roads, highways, and interchanges. Prepare detailed geometric designs, traffic control plans, and intersection layouts using industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley). Conduct traffic analysis, capacity studies, and feasibility assessments. Develop specifications, contract documents, and cost estimates for road construction projects. Ensure designs comply with all relevant national and provincial standards and regulations. Collaborate with clients, government agencies, and other stakeholders to gather project requirements and secure approvals. Oversee and mentor junior engineers and technicians involved in road design tasks. Conduct site investigations and reviews to assess existing conditions and construction progress. Manage project budgets, timelines, and resources effectively. Prepare technical reports, presentations, and project documentation.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution. Master's degree with a specialization in Transportation Engineering is advantageous. Professional registration as a Pr. Eng. with ECSA or equivalent. A minimum of 7-9 years of progressive experience in transportation engineering, with a strong focus on road and highway design. Proficiency in CAD software for civil engineering design, particularly AutoCAD Civil 3D. Solid understanding of traffic engineering principles, geometric design standards, and drainage design. Experience with transportation modeling software is a plus. Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead and motivate a design team.
