Job summary

Placements24 seeks an experienced Energy Trader (Commodities) based in Paarl, Western Cape, to manage a portfolio of electricity, natural gas, coal, and related derivatives. You will execute strategies, assess risk, and optimize positions in dynamic energy markets.

The role requires a strong track record in commodity trading, deep market knowledge, and excellent analytical skills to drive profitability and market presence in Southern Africa.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in commodity trading, preferably energy sector.
• Proven track record of successful trading and risk management.
• Deep understanding of energy markets, pricing mechanisms, and regulatory environments in SA and international markets.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent decision-making under pressure.
• Proficiency in financial modeling and trading platforms is essential.
• Exceptional communication and negotiation skills.
• Ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced trading environment.

Responsibilities

• Execute trading strategies for energy commodities across various markets.
• Monitor market conditions to identify trading opportunities and risks.
• Analyze market data, price trends, and supply/demand fundamentals.
• Manage and mitigate trading risks including market and credit risk.
• Develop and maintain relationships with brokers and counterparties.
• Collaborate with risk management and compliance teams on policies.
• Support hedging and physical supply/demand management with commercial teams.
• Report trading performance, positions, and risk exposures to senior management.
• Contribute to development and refinement of strategies and tools.
