Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Energy Trader for Upington, Northern Cape. The role involves strategic buying and selling of electricity, natural gas, and other energy commodities across physical and financial markets to maximize profitability while managing risk.

The ideal candidate has a strong track record in volatile markets, deep knowledge of energy market dynamics, and proficiency with Bloomberg and Refinitiv.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering or related quantitative field.
• Master's degree is a plus.
• 7+ years of energy trading experience, preferably electricity and natural gas.
• Proven track record of achieving profit targets in volatile markets.
• Strong analytical, quantitative and financial modeling skills.
• Knowledge of energy market structures, trading mechanisms and regulations.
• Proficiency with Bloomberg, Refinitiv and relevant analytical tools.
• Excellent decision-making under pressure and risk tolerance.
• Strong negotiation and communication skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced trading environment with cross-functional teams.
• Experience with risk management and hedging strategies is essential.

Responsibilities

• Execute trading strategies for electricity, natural gas, and other energy commodities in physical and financial markets.
• Monitor market trends, news, and indicators to identify trading opportunities and risks.
• Develop and implement quantitative and qualitative trading models and strategies.
• Manage and optimize the company's energy portfolio to achieve profit targets and manage price risk.
• Conduct in-depth market analysis, including supply/demand forecasts, price volatility assessments, and competitor analysis.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, counterparties, and market participants.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant trading regulations, policies, and risk management procedures.
• Communicate trading positions, market outlooks, and risk exposures to senior management.
• Analyze post-trade performance and identify areas for improvement in trading strategies.
• Collaborate with risk management, legal, and operational teams to ensure seamless trading activities.
