Placements24 is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Power Systems) for Richards Bay, South Africa. You will lead the design of electrical systems for large energy projects, mentor juniors, and ensure compliance with standards.

You will perform advanced studies, develop schematics and layouts, specify transformers and protection equipment, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems.
• 8+ years in electrical design with focus on power systems.
• Experience with ETAP or PSS/E.
• Knowledge of SANS, IEC, IEEE standards.
• Pr. Eng registration desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead electrical design for power systems including substations, transmission lines, and generation facilities.
• Perform power system studies (load flow, short circuit, stability, protection coordination).
• Develop schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design for power systems projects, including substations, transmission lines, and generation facilities.
• Perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, stability, and protection coordination analysis using software like ETAP or PSS/E.
• Develop detailed electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
• Specify electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, generators, and motors.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant national and international standards (e.g., SANS, IEC, IEEE).
• Conduct technical reviews of designs prepared by other engineers and technicians.
• Collaborate with project managers, civil/structural engineers, and procurement teams.
• Provide technical support during the construction and commissioning phases of projects.
• Mentor and guide junior electrical engineers and designers.
• Stay updated on the latest technologies and best practices in electrical power systems engineering.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems.
• A minimum of 8 years of experience in electrical design engineering, with a significant focus on power systems in the energy sector.
• Proven experience in conducting power system studies using industry-standard software.
• Strong knowledge of electrical equipment, protection systems, and grid codes.
• Familiarity with relevant South African and international electrical standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and design skills.
• Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities.
• Professional registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) with ECSA is highly desirable.
• Experience with renewable energy integration is a plus.
