Placements24 is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel specializing in Data Privacy and Compliance. This fully remote role supports global privacy programs and advises on POPIA, GDPR, and related regimes from anywhere in South Africa, with a preference for Polokwane, Limpopo.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent legal qualification.
• Admission as an Attorney or Advocate in South Africa is strongly preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years post-qualification experience focusing on data privacy, data protection, and information law.
• In-depth knowledge and practical experience with POPIA, GDPR, and other major international privacy frameworks.
• Experience drafting and negotiating privacy-related clauses in contracts.
• Strong understanding of data security principles and technology.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and deliver high-quality work remotely.
• CIPP or equivalent privacy certification is a significant advantage.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice and interpretation of global data privacy laws, including POPIA, GDPR, and CCPA.
• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive data privacy compliance programs and policies.
• Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs).
• Advise on data processing agreements, vendor contracts, and third-party data sharing arrangements.
• Manage data breach incidents, including investigation, reporting, and remediation efforts.
• Train and educate internal teams on data privacy best practices and legal requirements.
• Collaborate with the Information Security team to ensure alignment between privacy and security measures.
• Stay abreast of emerging privacy regulations and legal developments globally and advise the business accordingly.
