Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Remote Mechanical Systems Engineer in South Africa to design and optimize mechanical aspects of IoT devices. You will work with a distributed team to ensure robust, manufacturable, and user-friendly products, focusing on miniaturization, thermal management, and aesthetics, from anywhere in SA.

The role requires 6+ years in mechanical design for consumer electronics, strong CAD skills (Fusion 360/Onshape), and experience with plastics and injection molding.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 6 years of mechanical design experience, preferably for consumer electronics or IoT.
• Proficiency with cloud CAD platforms such as Fusion 360 or Onshape.
• Experience with thermal analysis and simulation tools.
• Strong understanding of DFMA and DFM principles.
• Excellent remote communication and self-management skills.
• Experience in plastic part design and injection molding.
• Familiarity with IP ratings and environmental testing standards.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components and enclosures for IoT devices focusing on miniaturization and aesthetics.
• Create 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software for prototyping and production.
• Run thermal and structural simulations to validate designs.
• Collaborate with electrical, firmware, and industrial design teams in a virtual environment.
• Select materials and manufacturing processes for cost-effective production.
• Prepare technical docs, specs, assembly instructions, and test reports.
• Support external vendors for prototyping and production runs.
• Contribute to future product roadmap concepts and device testing.
