Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Remote Grid Modernization Specialist to advance the reliability and efficiency of energy grids across regions in South Africa. You will plan and implement AMI, SCADA, and distribution automation, collaborating with a global team and utility partners.

The role requires 6+ years in power systems or grid modernization, with strong analytical and communication skills, and a focus on cybersecurity for grid systems. Fully remote within SA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• Master's degree is a plus.
• 6+ years of experience in power systems, utility operations, or grid modernization.
• Strong knowledge of smart grid technologies (AMI, DER, demand response, grid automation).
• Experience with grid modeling and simulation software.
• Familiarity with DNP3 and IEC 61850 communications protocols.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a remote, collaborative team.
• Knowledge of the SA energy market and regulatory framework is advantageous.
• Must be legally authorized to work in South Africa and comfortable working remotely.

Responsibilities

• Analyze existing grid infrastructure to identify modernization opportunities.
• Develop roadmaps for smart grid tech including AMI, SCADA, and distribution automation.
• Evaluate technologies and vendors for grid modernization.
• Collaborate with utility partners, engineering teams, regulators to execute projects.
• Develop specs, testing protocols, and implementation plans.
• Monitor performance of modernized grid components for optimization.
• Stay updated on industry best practices and regulatory changes.
• Prepare technical reports, presentations, and project documentation.
• Provide cybersecurity guidance for smart grid systems.
• Contribute to standards and policies for grid modernization.
