Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Process Design Engineer for a remote-first role based in Sandton, Gauteng. You will design and develop robust chemical processes, perform simulations, and specify equipment for specialty chemicals production.

The ideal candidate will have a strong chemical engineering background, at least 5 years of experience, and proficiency with Aspen Plus, HYSYS or ChemCAD. You will collaborate across R&D, project management and operations to deliver scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of process design experience, preferably in specialty or fine chemicals.
• Proficiency with process simulation software (Aspen Plus, HYSYS, ChemCAD) and AutoCAD/Plant 3D for P&ID development.
• Strong knowledge of unit operations, reaction engineering and separation technologies.
• Familiarity with PSM principles and GMP is an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop conceptual and detailed process designs for new facilities and modifications.
• Perform process simulations, mass and energy balances, and P&ID development.
• Specify reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers and pumps.
• Conduct feasibility studies and techno-economic assessments.
• Collaborate with R&D, project management and operations to meet objectives.
• Ensure SHE compliance and safety regulations.
• Review vendor proposals and support procurement and construction phases.
• Troubleshoot and optimize processes for efficiency and sustainability.
• Develop process narratives, operating procedures and training materials.
