Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a dedicated Environmental Health & Safety Officer with a specialization in cleaning and sanitation to remotely support operations in the Welkom, Free State area. You will develop, implement, and monitor safety policies, conduct remote risk assessments, and deliver training to on-site teams to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.

You should have at least 4 years in EHS, strong knowledge of SA legislation, and experience in training delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Professional certification (NOSA, NEBOSH) is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety, with a significant focus on cleaning operations, hygiene management, or industrial sanitation.
• Strong knowledge of South African EHS legislation and standards.
• Experience in developing and delivering EHS training.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and investigative skills.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders remotely.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS management software.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to sites in the Welkom region for inspections and training as needed.

Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and update EHS policies and procedures specifically for cleaning and sanitation operations.
• Conduct remote risk assessments and site audits focusing on hygiene, chemical safety, and waste management.
• Provide expert guidance and support to on-site cleaning teams and management regarding EHS matters.
• Deliver engaging and effective EHS training programs related to cleaning protocols, chemical handling, and emergency procedures.
• Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable national and local EHS regulations and industry standards.
• Maintain comprehensive EHS records, including training logs, inspection reports, and incident documentation.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies and external agencies as required.
• Promote a proactive safety culture through communication campaigns and engagement with staff at all levels.
• Stay current with emerging EHS trends and best practices in the cleaning and sanitation industry.
