Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Chemical Process Safety Engineer for our client in Mahikeng, North West. The role focuses on integrating process safety into design, operation and maintenance, driving hazard analyses, safety procedures and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and at least 4 years of experience in process safety, with strong skills in PHAs, SIS/LOPA and cross‑functional collaboration. A proactive safety culture is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in chemical process safety.
• Thorough knowledge of PHA methodologies (HAZOP, What-If, etc.) and risk assessment techniques.
• Understanding of chemical process safety regulations and standards.
• Experience with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and layers of protection analysis (LOPA).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and investigative skills.
• Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Proficiency in relevant safety software is a plus.
• Commitment to promoting a proactive safety culture.

Responsibilities

• Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) such as HAZOP, What-If, and FMEA studies.
• Develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and guidelines for chemical processes.
• Ensure compliance with relevant national and international process safety regulations (e.g., OSHA PSM, Seveso Directive).
• Perform risk assessments and recommend mitigation strategies to minimize hazards.
• Review engineering designs and operational procedures for safety compliance.
• Investigate process safety incidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver process safety training programs to employees.
• Maintain process safety management (PSM) systems and documentation.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to foster a strong safety culture.
• Stay current with advancements in process safety technology and best practices.
