Placements24 is seeking a Lead Electrical Design Engineer to orchestrate the design of electrical systems for large-scale renewable energy projects. This remote-first role collaborates with global teams and manages a skilled engineering group.

You will guide design from concept to detailed engineering, ensure compliance with IEC/IEEE standards, and support procurement, construction, and commissioning across South Africa.

Qualifications

• Master's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Systems.
• Min 10 years in electrical engineering; at least 5 years in renewable energy (solar/wind).
• Knowledge of grid interconnection standards and requirements.
• Experience leading engineering teams and managing design projects.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Electrical Design Engineer to join their fully remote team, revolutionizing the solar and wind energy sectors. You will be instrumental in conceptualizing, designing, and optimizing electrical systems for large-scale renewable energy projects. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design process for utility-scale solar and wind farm projects, from concept to detailed engineering.
• Develop and oversee the creation of single-line diagrams, schematics, protection and control schemes, and equipment specifications.
• Perform complex power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, stability, and grounding analysis using industry-standard software.
• Collaborate closely with project managers, civil engineers, and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.
• Mentor and guide a team of electrical engineers and designers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Ensure designs comply with all applicable international, national, and local codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., IEC, IEEE, NEC).
• Conduct technical reviews of designs performed by team members and external consultants.
• Support procurement, construction, and commissioning phases by providing expert technical assistance.
• Evaluate and select appropriate electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, inverters, and cabling.
• Contribute to the development of standardized design practices and tools to enhance efficiency and quality across all projects.

Requirements

• Master's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Power Systems or a related field.
• A minimum of 10 years of extensive experience in electrical engineering, with at least 5 years specifically focused on renewable energy projects (solar and/or wind).
• In-depth knowledge of grid interconnection standards and requirements.
• Proficiency in power system analysis software such as PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, or similar.
• Demonstrated experience in leading engineering teams and managing design projects.
• Strong understanding of renewable energy technologies, power electronics, and control systems.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead remote teams.
• Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) designation is highly desirable.
• Experience with energy storage systems (BESS) is a significant advantage.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, remote work environment.
