About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly accomplished Lead Electrical Design Engineer to spearhead electrical design projects for major commercial developments in Cape Town . This senior position is pivotal in ensuring the successful conceptualization, design, and implementation of complex electrical systems within large-scale commercial structures. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in building services, electrical distribution, lighting design, and low-voltage systems. You will lead a team of engineers and technicians, providing technical oversight and mentoring. This role demands exceptional leadership qualities, a keen eye for detail, and a deep understanding of building codes and project management principles. The role is based full-time in our client's state-of-the-art offices in Cape Town .

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design and engineering efforts for commercial building projects from concept to completion.


• Develop detailed electrical system designs, including power distribution, lighting, emergency power, and low-voltage systems.


• Prepare comprehensive design drawings, specifications, and calculations using industry-standard software.


• Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, and other disciplines to ensure integrated design solutions.


• Conduct site visits for existing condition assessments and construction administration.


• Review shop drawings, submittals, and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) during the construction phase.


• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.


• Mentor and guide junior electrical engineers and design staff.


• Ensure compliance with all relevant building codes, standards, and regulations in South Africa .


• Present design proposals and project updates to clients and stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.


• Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in electrical design engineering, specifically within the commercial building sector.


• Demonstrated experience in leading design teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.


• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit MEP) and electrical design tools (e.g., Dialux, ETAP).


• In-depth knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) and South African National Standards (SANS).


• Strong understanding of power distribution, lighting design, fire alarm systems, and building management systems.


• Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.


• Professional registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) is highly preferred.


• Experience with sustainable design practices and LEED certification is a plus.
