Our well-established consulting engineering company in Cape Town’s northern suburbs is seeking a full-time Junior–Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team in the fast-growing building-services industry.
The successful candidate must have full proficiency in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD, at least five years’ building-services design experience, and the ability to work independently. Professional registration is not required, but it is advantageous. Applicants should aspire to achieve ECSA professional registration in future.
Purpose of the Role
Support and deliver mechanical building-services projects from inception through to completion, ensuring compliance with South African codes, standards, budgets and programme requirements.
Responsibilities
- Manage mechanical building-services work across conceptualisation, design, implementation and close-out.
- Key Responsibility: Produce and coordinate drawings for all project phases using Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD, in line with the company’s Quality Management System (QMS).
- Perform heat-load calculations and a range of HVAC and building-services design calculations, including pressure-loss, hydraulic, duct-sizing and wet-services calculations.
- Prepare engineering design reports, technical reports, specifications, bills of quantities, budget estimates, scopes of work and tender documentation.
- Conduct client needs analyses, site assessments, surveys and status quo reports.
- Develop practical concepts, detail designs and solutions for projects.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients and other professionals.
- Attend internal and external meetings, site inspections and construction-monitoring activities.
- Assist with peer reviews of reports and drawings in line with the company’s QMS requirements.
- Ensure assigned work is completed accurately, on time and within budget.
- Perform relevant project management and team administrative duties. Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize work.
- Work directly with clients and other professionals with minimal supervision.
- Ensuring projects are delivered on time and on budget.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or BTech in Mechanical Engineering (BEng, BSc Eng or BTech) is essential.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in mechanical building-services design.
- Full proficiency in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD is essential.
- Professional registration with ECSA is advantageous but not required. Candidates should aspire to obtain professional registration in future.
- Working knowledge of South African building codes and standards, including relevant SANS codes and SANS 10400-T.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Word and Excel.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organisational, problem-solving and critical‑thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to travel for site supervision and inspections.
- Experience in FMCG, pharmaceutical or laboratory applications is advantageous.
- Experience with chilled water, wet services, drainage, DX, VRV/VRF, DTS fire designs, passenger lifts, and medical/laboratory gas systems is advantageous.
