Work Profile: Senior Mechanical Engineer
This position is based at: Johannesburg
The incumbent acts as a Senior Mechanical Engineer responsible for leading the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services projects while providing technical leadership to project teams. The role includes managing mechanical engineering services, overseeing project execution, engaging in business development activities, and ensuring the successful delivery of projects in accordance with client requirements, industry standards, and Henry Fagan (Pty) Ltd.'s Quality Management System (QMS).
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, coordination, supervision, and quality control of mechanical engineering services throughout all project phases. The incumbent will also contribute to business development initiatives by identifying new opportunities, supporting tender submissions, and maintaining strong client relationships.
This position reports to the Director: Energy & Building Services. The incumbent will be based in the Johannesburg office and will be required to travel to project sites and client offices as necessary.
Mechanical Engineering and Project Delivery
- Act as the Senior Mechanical Engineer on assigned building services projects.
- Lead the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services from concept through to project completion.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable legislation, codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Coordinate mechanical engineering designs with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Review technical documentation, calculations, specifications, reports, and drawings.
- Manage and monitor the quality, technical integrity, and timely delivery of project outputs.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, technologists, technicians, and graduate staff.
- Identify project risks and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
Site Supervision and Quality Assurance
- Conduct regular site inspections to monitor construction progress and workmanship.
- Verify that installations comply with approved designs, specifications, and quality standards.
- Resolve technical and interface coordination issues between disciplines and contractors.
- Attend site meetings and provide technical advice during construction.
- Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, and commissioning documentation where required.
Business Development and Client Relations
- Assist the Business Development team and Executive in identifying new business opportunities.
- Contribute to the preparation of expressions of interest, requests for proposals, and tender submissions.
- Develop technical content and cost estimates for proposals and tender documentation.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with clients, consultants, and industry stakeholders.
- Represent the company during client meetings and technical presentations where required.
Project Management and Reporting
- Manage project programmes, budgets, resources, and deliverables within allocated responsibilities.
- Monitor project performance and report progress to the Director and project stakeholders.
- Compile technical reports and project documentation to meet business and client requirements.
- Ensure projects are delivered within agreed timelines and commercial objectives.
- Assist in the management of project risks, contractual obligations, and quality requirements.
Compliance and Quality Management
- Ensure compliance with Henry Fagan's Quality Management System (QMS).
- Maintain compliance with applicable engineering legislation, regulations, and ECSA standards.
- Promote health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements throughout project delivery.
- Maintain accurate project records and documentation in accordance with company procedures.
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- BSc Eng or BEng Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) with ECSA.
- Minimum of 10 years' post-registration experience as a Professional Engineer.
- Valid driver's licence and own vehicle.
- No criminal record.
Experience should include:
- Hot water plant and heat pump systems design.
- Wet services, piping, water storage, and drainage systems design.
- Vertical transportation systems, including lifts and escalators.
- Smoke ventilation and smoke extraction systems.
- Experience in wastewater treatment plant design and Green Building design will be advantageous.
Key Knowledge Areas and Competencies

- Strong understanding of South African building regulations, engineering standards, and applicable codes.
- Sound knowledge of HVAC, fire protection, wet services, smoke control, hot water systems, and vertical transportation.
