You will ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety of critical refrigeration infrastructure, lead preventative maintenance, diagnose complex equipment, and mentor junior technicians in a fast-paced industrial environment.

Qualifications

• 7+ years hands-on experience as an Industrial Refrigeration Engineer.
• Experience with ammonia (NH3) and HFC/HCFC refrigerants.
• Proficient in brazing, welding and pipefitting for refrigeration systems.
• Strong understanding of thermodynamics and refrigeration cycles.

Responsabilités

• Install, commission, and maintain industrial refrigeration units and pipework.
• Perform inspections and diagnostic tests to identify issues.
• Troubleshoot and repair compressors, condensers, evaporators, and control systems.
• Conduct preventative maintenance according to schedules.
• Manage refrigerant levels and ensure regulatory compliance and leak detection.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Industrial Refrigeration Engineer to oversee the installation, maintenance, and repair of large-scale refrigeration systems in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal . This position requires a deep understanding of industrial cooling processes, including ammonia and Freon-based systems, often found in food processing plants, cold storage facilities, and manufacturing environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of critical refrigeration infrastructure. This role demands excellent technical acumen, strong problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to preventative maintenance. You will play a vital role in maintaining the operational continuity of key industrial operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, commission, and maintain industrial refrigeration units and associated pipework.
• Perform regular inspections and diagnostic tests on refrigeration systems to identify potential issues.
• Troubleshoot and repair complex refrigeration equipment, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, and control systems.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on all refrigeration plant and machinery according to established schedules.
• Manage refrigerant levels, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and leak detection protocols.
• Interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical manuals to facilitate repairs and modifications.
• Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards and company policies, particularly concerning hazardous refrigerants.
• Maintain detailed logs of all maintenance, repair activities, and inventory of spare parts.
• Provide technical support and guidance to junior technicians and site personnel.
• Respond to emergency breakdowns and ensure rapid resolution to minimize downtime.

Requirements

• Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience as an Industrial Refrigeration Engineer, preferably within the manufacturing or food processing sectors in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal .
• Trade qualification in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, or equivalent industry certification.
• Expert knowledge of industrial refrigeration systems, including ammonia (NH3) and HFC/HCFC refrigerants.
• Proficiency in brazing, welding, and pipefitting techniques for refrigeration systems.
• Strong understanding of thermodynamic principles and refrigeration cycles.
• Experience with PLC control systems and troubleshooting industrial automation is a plus.
• Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively under pressure.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within the region as required.
