Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Head Sommelier to lead wine service and cellar operations at a premier Stellenbosch winery. You will curate the wine list, oversee storage and service, and train staff to deliver exceptional guest experiences.

The role requires extensive wine knowledge, strong leadership, and the ability to educate guests and team about both local and international wines. A passion for wine and hospitality is essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years as a sommelier, with at least 2 years in a Head/Senior role.
• Advanced certification from a recognized sommelier association (e.g., WSET Diploma or CMS) is highly desirable.
• Extensive knowledge of international and South African wine regions and varietals.
• Exceptional palate and wine tasting expertise.
• Outstanding communication and customer service skills.
• Experience in cellar management, inventory control, and wine list curation.
• Ability to train and inspire a team.
• Willingness to work weekends/evenings and flexible hours.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain an exceptional wine list that complements seasonal menus.
• Manage all wine cellar operations including inventory, storage, and rotation.
• Provide expert wine recommendations to guests to enhance dining experiences.
• Train and mentor staff on wine knowledge, service standards, and upselling techniques.
• Conduct regular wine tastings and educational sessions for staff and guests.
• Ensure proper temperature, glassware, and decanting procedures for wines.
• Collaborate with Chef and F&B Manager on wine pairing and menu development.
• Monitor wine sales and manage inventory to control costs and reduce waste.
• Stay updated on wine trends and best practices.
• Maintain immaculate standards in the wine cellar and service areas.
