Job summary

HID Global in Durban, South Africa, is seeking a Firmware Engineer to design, implement, and test firmware for embedded platforms and real-time systems. You will work closely with hardware, software, and QA teams to deliver secure, reliable access control solutions.

The role emphasizes porting to new hardware, protocol development, and robust defect resolution. The ideal candidate has 2+ years in embedded firmware, strong C programming skills, and experience with debugging tools and IDEs.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional experience in embedded software or firmware development.
• Proficiency in C programming for embedded systems.
• Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded systems, and debugging tools.
• Understanding of software development lifecycle and version control systems such as Git.
• Basic knowledge of communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I²C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, TCP/IP, or similar technologies.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain embedded firmware for real-time and embedded systems.
• Implement software features, enhancements, and defect fixes according to product requirements.
• Participate in the design, development, testing, and verification of firmware solutions.
• Assist with porting software to new hardware platforms and components.
• Support the development and maintenance of communication protocols and device interfaces.
• Debug and resolve issues identified during development, testing, manufacturing, and field deployments.
• Create and maintain technical documentation related to firmware design and implementation.
• Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and troubleshooting activities.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful product delivery.
• Follow established software development processes, coding standards, and quality procedures.
• Support implementation and maintenance of secure communication and firmware update mechanisms.
