Job summary

thyssenkrupp Uhde South Africa seeks an experienced Senior Process Engineer to join the Process Engineering Department in Durban. The role involves leading owner’s team interactions, leading engineers, and delivering fire-protection/process-safety design deliverables.

The candidate should have 15+ years’ experience in energy/chemical refining projects, with ECSA registration and commissioning/start-up exposure. LPG/cryo storage and brownfields experience are highly valued.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level chemical engineering degree or equivalent required.
• 15+ years engineering experience; 20+ years preferable.
• Experience in contracting environments within energy/chemical refining sectors.
• Professional Registration with ECSA required.
• Experience with commissioning and plant start-up.
• Refrigerated LPG, cryogenic storage, terminal, marine, EPC and brownfields experience desired.

Responsibilities

• Lead the engineer team and own project scope.
• Lead HAZOP and SIL reviews and hazard analysis.
• Prepare Scope of Work and manage consultants to deliver to scope, quality and schedule.
• Ensure compliance with NFPA standards and API guidance for LPG facilities.
• Contribute to PFD/P&ID reviews, 3D model reviews and constructability checks.
• Engage in fire safety/process safety deliverables and QA on projects.

Job description

Your responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Senior Process Engineer with relevant design house experience to join the Process Engineering Department.

The successful candidate will be required to fulfil the following job description but not limited to:

• Interaction with the client and forming part of an owner’s team with the client
• Performing lead engineer role.
• Lead HAZOP and SIL Reviews and Hazardous Area Classification Reviews
• Participate in PFD and P&ID Reviews, 3D model and constructability reviews
• Preparation of Scope of Work / Works Information for supply of services and management of consultants to deliver to scope, quality and schedule.
• NFPA 59 and other applicable NFPA fire-protection standards.
• API guidance applicable to LPG facilities and refrigerated storage.
• South African MHI, fire authority, environmental and emergency-response requirements.
• Consequence modelling, QRA, firewater hydraulics, dispersion and thermal-radiation principles.
• Review and participate in HAZID, HAZOP, QRA, MHI, fire-risk assessment and hazardous-area classification activities and verify action close-out.
• Firewater demand, pumps, tanks, ring main, hydrants/monitors, deluge, foam and fixed suppression systems

The scope of this role will require the incumbent to work in a projects based environment covering all phases of project execution (feasibility, concept, basic, detail, construction support and commissioning).

The individual will engage in fire protection/ process safety design activities related to producing and checking fire protection/ process safety engineering deliverables.

The individual will be responsible for fire protection/ process safety deliverables and quality/ technical quality assurance on the project

Your profile

• The successful candidate must be in possession of a BSc. Chemical Engineering degree (or equivalent) with 15 years engineering experience. 20+ years of experience is preferable.
• Experience in contracting environment working on projects in the energy and chemical/ refining / petrochemical industries is required.
• Lead Engineer Experience
• Professional Registration with ECSA is required.
• The candidate must have participated in commissioning and plant start-up.
• The candidate must have refrigerated LPG, cryogenic storage, terminal, marine, EPC and brownfields experience. Strong LPG experience is essential.
• The candidate must direct fire protection/ process safety experience.
• Recognized fire-engineering or process-safety qualifications are advantageous. Relevant fire-protection, process-safety, MHI or risk-assessment competency credentials are strongly preferred.
