Job summary

Responsibilities

• Assist in installations, repairs and maintenance of traffic signals, lights and streetlights
• Assist in installation, repairs and maintenance of electrical enclosures and meters
• Assist in LV and MV plant and equipment installations and maintenance
• Assist in transformers, switchgears, mini-substations and substations work
• Assist in electrical systems for residential and commercial properties
• Assist in solar system installations for residential and commercial properties
• Repair or replace wiring, equipment or fixtures using hand tools and power tools
• Carry out routine maintenance and servicing of tools and equipment
• Record and request materials, tools and equipment needed for work
• Ensure materials are removed from site and returned to office yard or premises
• Report tools and equipment needing external repairs
• Ensure safe handling and storage of materials and tools
• Drive to sites with team members and transport materials safely
• Follow OHS and ISO 45001 requirements
• Wear full PPE at site and ensure team PPE compliance

Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Electrical Assistant supports Electrician in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment to ensure that they are functioning safely and efficiently across all facilities. The role includes assisting the Electrician in ensuring quality workmanship, environmental compliance, and adherence to occupational health and safety requirements in line with ISO standards. Duties are not exhaustive and may include other reasonable tasks as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

4. Assist in maintaining tool and equipment register and ensure they are in good working condition.

• Assist in the installation, repairs and maintenance of traffic signals, traffic lights, and streetlights.
• Assist in the installation, repairs and maintenance of electrical enclosures and electrical meters.
• Assist in the installation, repairs and maintenance of LV and MV plant and equipment.
• Assist in the installation, repairs, and maintenance of transformers, switchgears, mini-substations and substations.
• Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, including wiring, controls, and lighting for residential and commercial properties.
• Assist in the installation, repairs, and maintenance of solar systems for residential and commercial properties.
• Assist in repairing or replacing wiring, equipment or fixtures using hand tools and power tools.

• Assist in identifying electrical problems using testing devices.
• Assist in reading and interpreting electrical diagrams and blueprints.

• Carry out routine maintenance, cleaning, and servicing of tools and equipment.
• Assist in recording and requesting all material, tools and equipment required for the work.

1. Vehicle Handling, Inspection and Transportation
2. Safety and Compliance

• Perform basic vehicle inspection (tyres, oil, lights etc.) and complete vehicle inspection sheet daily.
• Safely load, secure and offload material, tools and equipment on the vehicle.
• Drive company vehicles (trucks and bakkies) to safely transport material, tools, equipment and team members to sites.
• Comply with all traffic regulations.
• Ensure that team members clean the company vehicles regularly and keep them well-maintained.
• Ensure that the vehicle is parked properly without being an obstruction on the parking area or road.
• Report vehicle faults and accident promptly.

• Follow all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS Act) and ISO 45001 requirements.
• Assist in ensuring that all electrical works is carried out safely, protecting both workers and the public.

• Always wear full PPE (safety shoes, overalls, reflector vest, hard-hat, respirator, dust mask, gloves, goggles, ear protection etc.) as per the site requirements.
• Assist in ensuring that all team members always wear full PPE as per the site requirements.
• Teamwork and Reporting

• Implement and maintain traffic management measures on live roads (cones, flagmen, signage).
• Participate in toolbox talks, safety drills, and incident reporting.
• Assist in conducting and developing risk assessment together with the team.
• Assist in ensuring that the workshop, office yard and worksite are kept neat, organised, and compliant with health and safety standards.

• Collaborate with managers, supervisors, team leaders, and fellow team members to meet project timelines.
• Assist in training and guiding general workers.
• Assist in conducting site assessments and provide the report as required.
• Assist in providing regular updates on work progress, challenges and safety observations.
• Assist in compiling and completing daily job cards for all tasks undertaken.
• Assist in capturing and attaching before, during, and after photographs using a GPS-enabled camera.

REQUIREMENTS

• Grade 10 or Engineering Studies N1 or NQF Level 2 (minimum) OR Grade 11 or Electrical Engineering N2 or NQF Level 3 (preferred).
• 2 Years Experience in Electrical or Construction Works.
• Valid Police Clearance Certificate.
• Valid Driver's License Code 10 (C1) or Code 14 (EC) with PrDP (Professional Driving Permit).
