Placements24 is recruiting for a Chemical Safety Engineer for a major chemical manufacturer in Mossel Bay, Western Cape. The role focuses on health, safety and environmental compliance, developing and managing safety programs, risk assessments, and sustaining a strong safety culture across the site.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related field, 6+ years in chemical safety, and solid knowledge of PSM and HSE regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field.
• Minimum 6 years of experience in a chemical safety engineering role.
• In-depth knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and practices.
• Familiarity with South African and international HSE legislation.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Experience delivering training programs.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain robust HSE management systems.
• Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses (e.g., HAZOP, JSA, P&ID reviews).
• Investigate incidents and determine root causes with corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations and standards.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors.
• Perform safety audits and inspections of plant facilities.
• Manage emergency preparedness and response plans and drills.
• Serve as primary contact for regulatory agencies.
• Promote a proactive safety culture at all levels.
