Job Summary

This position is located in the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH), Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health (BEOH), Environmental Epidemiology and Surveillance Section, and is maintained through a contract and ongoing partnership with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's Department of Population Health Sciences.

The incumbent provides epidemiologic leadership to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) grant-funded Wisconsin Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) program. The program's goal is to develop and maintain tools to increase the accessibility and availability of data on health outcomes and related environmental hazards and exposures. Responsibilities include: supporting development and maintenance of Tableau interactive dashboards for data visualization; using SAS or R to compile, prepare, and submit complex datasets and accompanying metadata to CDC semi-annually; developing and implementing specifications for new data topics through collaboration with intra-agency and external partners; surveilling carbon monoxide poisoning events; and maintaining an active presence and providing leadership on national EPHT workgroups.

In addition, the incumbent conducts epidemiologic analyses related to specified health effects with links to environmental factors and disseminates findings to appropriate audiences. The incumbent provides epidemiologic expertise to incident-specific responses within the Bureau and conducts epidemiological investigations and surveillance of exposure to environmental agents related to specific diseases and reportable conditions. The incumbent interfaces with local public health and other stakeholders to report conditions and address case-specific issues. The incumbent leads the development of peer-reviewed manuscripts, surveillance briefs, and presentations to the scientific community at professional conferences. Under the guidance of the principal investigator, the incumbent contributes to the development and submission of federal grants and cooperative agreements and assists with reporting to CDC on performance measures and progress reports.

It is anticipated that this position will be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus work location.

This position is full or part-time, 80%-100%.

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship and TN visas. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment. Compensation

The minimum salary for the position is $60,000 annually but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience working in the field of epidemiology, with a preference given to areas of environmental health and/or public health.
  • Experience creating, cleaning, and manipulating large datasets.
  • Technical expertise in statistical analysis of data using SAS or R software to manage, analyze, and visualize data.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using Tableau software for developing and maintaining interactive dashboards for data visualization.
  • Experience writing manuscripts, scientific reports and/or grant-required reports.
  • Experience providing consultation, education, or training on technical concepts in public health or a related field.
  • Experience maintaining, developing, or evaluating surveillance systems that use health data.
  • Experience communicating technical information to various audiences.
