Job summary

Lindenwood University is seeking a part-time Writing Specialist to support students and instructors through classroom writing activities, consultations, and writing center services. You will collaborate with instructors to design and improve writing assignments and provide in-person and virtual feedback.

Responsibilities include training junior staff, creating video tutorials, and maintaining student records in WCOnline.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent experience.
  • Master’s degree preferred in English or related field.
  • Experience tutoring or teaching in higher education or writing centers is desirable.
  • Ability to provide effective feedback and maintain student records is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide feedback on writing assignments in person, video chat, or email.
  • Deliver in-class writing support and one-on-one consultations.
  • Develop training materials and resources for instructors and consultants.
  • Mentor and train other writing specialists and consultants.
  • Embed within LMS to support students and instructors in Canvas.

This position collaborates with instructors to develop various levels of writing assignments and assists students in person and virtually while at the Writing Center.Essential Job Functions and Performance IndicatorsThe intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the types of duties and level of responsibility that will be required of positions given this title. Employees may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.Job Responsibilities and ExecutionProvides feedback on students’ writing assignments via in-person, video chat, or email feedbackProvides intense in-class writing supportDevelops training materials and a composite of resources for writing instructors; trains and mentors writing specialists and consultantsProvides effective student development and learning strategies for working with under-prepared, approved accommodations for, or anxious studentsConsults with faculty and staff to identify areas for curricular pedagogical enhancementConducts writing conferences for studentsStays current – through readings, videos, and conference attendance – on best practices in writing center pedagogiesProvides review, minor editing, and proofreading of instructors’ scholarly articlesEmbeds directly within the learning management system to provide support to graduate and undergraduate students and instructors, as requestedService ExcellenceSupports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellenceModels, supports and holds others accountable to the University’s valuesSupports campus-wide events, to include Family Day and Future LionsProvides excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and community membersCommunication, Teamwork, and CollaborationCollaborates with Writing Center colleagues on best practices and conference techniquesExplains grammar concepts, writing pedagogy, and best practicesObserves writing consultants to ensure quality of serviceWorks with student academic and support services and library staff to support students’ academic needsDevelops pre-made video tutorials to support concepts and platforms to include Canvas CommonsTracks appointments and maintains student records in WCOnline (the Writing Center's online scheduling program) for assessment planJob may require other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
