Job summary

Auburn University at Montgomery is seeking dedicated peer mentors who will support undergraduate and graduate students by guiding them through course material and classroom expectations. Mentors act like teaching assistants without grading responsibilities, and they will schedule and hold weekly office hours, both on campus and virtually for online courses.

Selected mentors will work with academic departments, coordinate student engagement at AUM events, and help connect learners to campus

Qualifications

  • Current full‑time AUM undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA.
  • Completed 2 full semesters at AUM.
  • Must commit to fall and spring semesters.
  • Five hours per week per course for 15 weeks (75 hours).
  • Six hours of training and workshops (four hours pre‑semester and two hours during the semester).
  • Mentors may participate in EEEC activities during the summer semester.

Responsibilities

  • Help guide and encourage fellow students as peer mentors.
  • Act as a class leader and support system to understand course material and expectations.
  • Maintain weekly office hours in the Library Tower or virtually for online courses.
  • Coordinate with professors and academic departments for assigned courses.
  • Attend all assigned classes and meet with the professor weekly.
  • Assist with assignments and academic success for students.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Peer Mentors at AUM are undergraduate and graduate students who help guide and encourage fellow students. They are class leaders who act as a support system by helping students understand course material and class expectations.
  • The role of a peer mentor can be compared to that of a teaching assistant without the responsibility of grading assignments.
  • Peer mentors receive priority registration for the semester for which they mentor.
  • Applicants selected to be peer mentor will be assigned to work with academic departments and will be expected to work with students in a course approved by that department.
  • Uphold AUM's mission and build community within the classroom.
  • Offer student perspectives in discussions and encourage reflection.
  • Lead engaging activities like group work, guest speakers, and study sessions.
  • Help students with assignments and academic success.
  • Attend all assigned classes and meet with the professor weekly.
  • Hold weekly office hours in the Library Tower (or virtually for online courses).
  • Coordinate and attend AUM events with students.
  • Connect students with campus resources and services.
  • Model appropriate behavior and maintain confidentiality (FERPA, Title IX).
Additional Responsibilities

Keep communication open with professors and complete interaction logs.

  • Clock in/out and report any time discrepancies to the department.
  • Complete assessments and surveys as needed.
  • Complete training and attend all scheduled meetings.
Qualifications

  • Able to speak in front of a classroom of students.
  • Comfortable leading group discussions.
  • Ability to provide explanations of course subject matter.
