Job summary

Berea College is seeking a Woodcraft Manager to oversee the education and development of students in woodworking and manage day-to-day operations. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree or substantial experience, alongside at least 3 years in production woodworking and teaching experience.

The role includes developing an educational curriculum, supervising students, and ensuring safety in the workshop according to OSHA standards. This position is not eligible for benefits and requires significant physical activity.

Job description

Overview

The Woodcraft Manager supports the Director of Woodcraft in the day-to-day operations, including the management of students. This position is first and foremost a teaching position with development and implementation of an educational curriculum focused on product design, conceptual storytelling, and technical skills appropriate to the craft area. As an active design and production environment, the Manager will educate students in technical processes and design, and support the Director with production schedules to meet budgetary requirements. The Manager will learn and implement standard OSHA safety regulations and guide the safe flow of work. The Manager is directly involved in the design of new items.

Key Responsibilities
  • Education and development of students in Woodcraft
  • Develops and enacts educational curriculum to ensure student learning
  • Contributes to the development of the storytelling and messaging goals of Student Craft
  • Manage production schedules
  • Manage day-to-day operations of Woodcraft
  • Maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Follow OSHA guidelines for safety in the workshop
  • Contribute to design, development and prototyping of new products for production that align with and support the College’s Great Commitments
  • Aid campus community in special projects/needs as requested or appropriate
  • In support of Berea College’s great commitments, supervise students, including scheduling, assigning and approving work; develop students’ workplace acumen and provide tangible work experience

  • 3+ years production/studio woodworking, and supervisory experience

Special Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

  • Teaching experience in the studio setting; ability to develop, support, and enact curriculum with learning outcomes including design and technical execution
  • Leadership abilities and good communication skills; knowledge of production studio methods; costing/product development & prototyping; experience with woodcraft machinery, tools, and processes; understanding of OSHA and safety guidelines
  • Support for the College’s Great Commitments and mission-aligned approaches in Student Craft
Licenses and Physical Requirements
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Lifting more than 50 lbs on a regular basis
Environmental Conditions
  • Constant dust and noise from woodworking equipment; eye, ear and dust protection necessary for many duties
Ability To Operate The Following Vehicles Or Equipment
  • Motor vehicles, forklift, all Wood Shop tools and equipment
