Job summary

Harvard University is seeking a Woodshop Supervisor to oversee studio shops for wood and metalwork in an instructional setting. You will train, organize, and lead shop monitors, ensuring safety and confidence for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff.

The role requires a Bachelor's (or equivalent) plus 5+ years in professional/academic shops, with experience on woodworking and metalworking equipment.

Qualifications

• College Degree (Bachelors) in a related field or related work experience, plus at least 5 years of experience in both professional and academic/instructional shops.
• Experience using and training on woodworking and metalworking equipment.
• Masters degree in related field and safety/OSHA certifications are a plus.
• Experience with curriculum development and teaching at a college level.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Hires, manages, and trains 5–8 LHT employees; creates work schedules and daily task lists.
• Develops equipment and process training for staff, faculty, students, and TA/TFs; updates training to stay current with safety regulations.
• Assists students on classwork, research and thesis work; assists faculty and TA/TFs with class projects and demonstrations.
• Maintains, repairs, and updates over 25 pieces of stationary wood and metal working equipment.
• Maintains budget for woodshop and metal shop; orders materials and prepares yearly overhead costs; plans equipment updates.

Job Description

Job Summary: This position works with studio and film classes. This position isresponsible for training, organizing the tools and setting the tonefor wood and metal shop use. While the wood and metal shops areessential steps for all students working in the arts, the wood andmetal shops is also used by artist faculty, visiting artists, staffand the exhibition crew. This position not only provides trainingbut must also ensure the safety of our students while inspiringconfidence and competence. This position consults, offers guidance,and help with classwork, project, and design for students(undergraduate and graduate), faculty, TA/TFs, and staff, and isresponsible for the onsite safety of a large part of thedepartment.

This position maintains records and ensures individualdocumentation is up to date. This position hires, trains andsupervises all monitors. This position is responsible for the general safety of the wood and metal shop.

This is a full-time, 10-month a year position. This position isresponsible for maintaining the quality control required to ensuresafety for all users.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

• Hires, manages, and trains 5 – 8 LHT employees. Creates workschedules for LHT employees. Prepares daily lists of tasks for theLHT employees to complete.
• Develops equipment and process training for staff, faculty,TA/TFs, and students (undergraduate and graduate students).Regularly updates training to stay current with best practice andsafety regulations and recommendations. Conducts training forstaff, faculty, TA/TFs, and students. Trains LHT employees toconduct tool and process trainings for staff, faculty, TA/TFs, andstudents.
• Assists students (undergraduate and graduate) on classwork,research, and thesis work. Assists faculty and TA/TFs with classprojects (ordering materials, discussing class assignments, classdemonstrations and trainings, etc.)
• Maintains, repairs, and updates over 25 pieces of stationarywood and metal working equipment.
• Maintains budget for the woodshop and metal shop. Orderingmaterials, consumables, services, and equipment for classes and thewood/metal shop. Prepares financial records of yearly costs(overhead) for the wood and metal shop consumables/repairs. Createsplans/proposals for purchasing new equipment and updating dustcollection.

Working Conditions:

Wood shop and metal shop (instructional lab). Primarily in onebuilding, occasionally is asked to visit other buildings forconsultations.

Physical Requirements:

Standing majority of the day (concrete floors), lifting over 20lbsregularly, using tools with constant vibration, job requireswearing hearing and eye protection consistently to prevent longtern damage.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

College Degree (Bachelors) in a related field (Studio Art,Sculpture, Furniture, etc.) or related work experience, plus atleast 5 years of experience in both professional andacademic/instructional shops. Experience using and training onwoodworking and metalworking equipment.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

Secondary Degree (Masters) in a related field (Studio Art,Sculpture, Furniture, Education, etc., experience teaching at acollege level, safety/OSHA certifications, experience withcurriculum development. Experience with other 3D/studio artmediums/skills (moldmaking, electronics, printmaking, stonecarving, etc.). Excellent organizational skills with particularability to prioritize work in an environment with multiple andconflicting interests. Proven project and/or program managementskills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Abilityto work independently with minimal supervision.
