Job summary

State of Minnesota in Mapleton is seeking a Transportation Generalist to maintain roadways during snow and ice events and support winter operations. The role involves driving with a Commercial Driver’s License, performing equipment maintenance, and assisting with winter stockpile management.

Ideal candidates will have a CDL with tanker endorsement, 1 year of winter maintenance experience, and English proficiency for logs and communications.

Qualifications

• A Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.
• One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
• OR Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Responsibilities

• Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment – maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and cleans equipment post storm.
• Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
• Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals. Includes all setup work associated with liquid anti-icing and de-icing chemicals, hauling, mixing, measuring, and reporting.
• Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes.
• Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
• Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
