Job summary

E. & J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, CA offers a Micro- and Systems Biology Internship for 6 months (July–December 2027). You will join our wine science team to explore grape–yeast interactions and aroma biotransformation during fermentation.

You’ll perform molecular biology techniques and analyze gene expression while studying yeast, bacteria, and grapevines to understand pathways shaping wine sensory attributes. This on-site internship emphasizes hands-on learning.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in college/university or have earned a Bachelor’s/Master’s in Life Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, or Engineering.
• Available for the full 6-month duration (July–December 2027).
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle; able to drive up to 25% of the time.
• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work at heights up to 50 feet.
• Must be 21+ and willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when needed.
• Strong technical and analytical problem-solving skills; good oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

• Study biology of yeast, bacteria, and grapevines to understand pathways affecting wine sensory attributes.
• Perform molecular biology techniques: nucleic acid extraction from grapes and yeast.
• Conduct gene expression analysis and nucleic acid electrophoresis; sequence analysis.
• Evaluate yeast strains and characterize wine sensory compounds during fermentations.
• Contribute to research on aroma and mouthfeel improvements in winemaking.
