Job summary

The City of Akron is hiring for a routine semi-skilled laborer in the water distribution system. You will work in a crew to install, maintain, and repair water mains, hydrants, and related appurtenances, operating trucks and equipment as needed.

The role requires at least one year of paid laborer experience (or equivalent training) and an Ohio CDL B without airbrake restriction. You must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and work outdoors in all weather.

Qualifications

• At least one year of paid laborer experience or equivalent training.
• Equivalency allows substitution of up to 50% paid experience with related training.
• Possession of a valid State of Ohio class B commercial driver's license without airbrake restriction.
• Basic knowledge of the methods and techniques of water distribution system installation, maintenance, and repair.
• Ability to perform water system installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.
• Ability to follow simple oral instructions and communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
• Ability to perform strenuous and hazardous work in all types of weather.
• Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 80 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled tasks in installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, services, hydrants, valves and appurtenances.
• Operate loaders, trucks, pumps, air compressors, and other hand/power tools as part of a crew.
• Set up barricades, flags, lights, and cones to warn motorists.
• Notify residents of water shut-offs, disruptions, and construction activities.
• Assist in repairing water mains and laying new mains and services.
• Direct traffic around excavations and maintain job site cleanliness.
• Maintain facility grounds and assist in general cleaning and upkeep.
