Position Summary

Under the supervision of Lead Water Plant Operators, Shift Supervisors, or Plant Supervisors, the Water Plant Operator II manages the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of water treatment facilities, including raw water intake, headworks, basins, filtration, SCADA, and pump stations. The role ensures asset condition, water quality, and safety standards are met or exceeded, performing and supervising related tasks for efficient facility operation.

Major Responsibilities

• Collaborate with supervisory staff and operators to optimize process efficiency, monitoring, and compliance.
• Monitor treatment processes via control systems and visual observations, including chemical feed, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
• Perform water quality tests and maintain records, ensuring parameters meet standards.
• Adjust chemical dosages and plant processes based on monitoring data.
• Operate pumps, valves, chemical systems, and SCADA controls; manage alarms and respond appropriately.
• Maintain equipment, assist with repairs, and coordinate maintenance activities.
• Support transmission system operations, including reservoirs and pump stations.
• Respond to emergencies, spills, and hazardous material incidents, following safety protocols.
• Adhere to safety guidelines, identify hazards, and support safety programs.
• Communicate effectively with team members, vendors, and stakeholders.
• Complete operational logs, service requests, and maintain documentation.
• Assist in training new operators and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of water treatment processes, compliance, and maintenance; troubleshooting skills; ability to interpret water quality tests.
• Training in chemical safety and hazardous materials response.
• Effective communication skills, basic computer proficiency, and mechanical and electrical knowledge.

Education and Experience

• Two years of water treatment experience or relevant education and experience.
• Texas Class C Water Treatment Operator's License.
• High school diploma or GED; associate degree or trade certification preferred.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Environmental and Physical Conditions

Work is performed in water treatment environments, both indoors and outdoors, often involving exposure to chemicals, machinery, and environmental hazards. Physical demands include lifting, standing, walking, and working in adverse weather, confined spaces, and at heights. Candidates must pass medical and safety certifications, including respiratory protection where required.
