The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position ofWASTEWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM TECHNICIAN I/IIto fill one (1) vacancy in theWastewater Collection Divisionof the Public Works Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

The City of Riverside Public Works Department operates and maintains 820 miles of gravity main sewers, 414 miles of city-owned sewer laterals, approximately 16,000 manholes, and 20 wastewater pump stations.

The Wastewater Collection System Technician I performs a variety of basic, unskilled, and semi-skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewers and storm drains.

Typical duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
When working as a Wastewater Collection Technician I:
  • Operate and use general equipment in preventive maintenance and emergency cleaning of sanitary sewers and storm drains; remove damaged or broken lateral or sewer lines and; water jet sewer lines and other wastewater and storm drain systems throughout the City.
  • Locate, excavate, maintain and repair sewer lines; identify problems and determine issues and concerns.; use cameras to identify clogs and problems.
  • Build and repair manholes; raise and lower manholes.
  • Operate and use a jackhammer adhering to safety standards and protocols; pour and finish concrete.
  • Safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment used for cleaning and maintaining sewers or storm drains.
  • Use a computer, cellular phone, tablet or similar electronic device.
  • Spray and apply insecticide in manholes and pipelines for cockroach and other pest control.
  • Maintain, prepare, and draft routine records; ensure accurate tracking of work completed.
  • Use self-contained breathing apparatus, as required.
  • Answer and respond to calls from residents having problems with wastewater collection systems; perform all work associated with handling submitted issues and system deficiencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
When working as a Wastewater Collection Technician II:
  • Operate and use a hydrojet, vactor, and truck in preventive maintenance and emergency cleaning of sanitary sewers; remove damaged lines and pipes.
  • Locate, excavate, maintain and repair sewer lines; identify problems and determine issues and concerns.
  • Build and repair manholes; raise and lower manholes.
  • Operate and use a jackhammer adhering to safety standards and protocols; pour and finish concrete.
  • Safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment used for cleaning and maintaining sewers or storm drains.
  • Spray and apply insecticide in manholes and pipelines for cockroach and other pest control.
  • Maintain, prepare, and draft routine records; ensure accurate tracking of work completed.
  • Use self-contained breathing apparatus, as required.
  • Lead a two-person crew in minor sewer maintenance and repair operations; act as lead when requested or required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Use a computer, cellular phone, tablet, or similar electronic device.
Recruitment Guidelines:
Wastewater Collection System Technician I:

Education and Experience

Education:High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).

Experience:
One (1) year of experience in customer service, general construction, collections, or another related field.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a Grade I Collection System Certification from the California Water Environment Association within 12 months of employment.

Possession of a valid, appropriate Class “C” California Motor Vehicle License and Possession of a valid class B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License within 6 months of employment. Some positions may additionally require the possession of a class A license.

Wastewater Collection System Technician II:

Education and Experience:

Education:High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).

Experience:One (1) year of experience performing tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewers and storm drains or as a Wastewater Collection System Technician I.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate, valid class B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Some assignments may additionally require the possession of a class A license.

Possession of a Grade II Collection System Certification from the California Water Environment Association.


Highly Desirable Qualification:
Experience in the operation and maintenance of all aspects of wastewater collection systems and equipment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions (both):
Work is done inside and outside in the field with exposure to inclement weather, hazards, chemicals, equipment, construction materials, wastewater, and fumes. Employees may interact with staff and/or public and private representatives and will provide professional customer service.
