Job description

Clean Harbors in Devens, MA is seeking a Waste Material Handler (Insite Chemist) to handle, segregate, pack, and inspect chemical waste in accordance with Federal/State/Local regulations and our company policies and procedures. This position will work both indoors and outdoors at plants, labs, customer sites, and is responsible for assisting with lab packs within customer facilities, household hazardous waste (HHW) collections, and lab moves. This is a customer-facing position, working at customer sites daily. The Environmental Field Chemist role is (NOT) laboratory-based.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Ensuring health and safety compliance by following all safe work practices, policies, and procedures
  2. Preparing packing lists, labels, manifests, and land disposal restriction notifications
  3. Inspecting staging, accumulating, and storage areas for proper housekeeping and compliance
  4. Inspecting drums for leaks, spills, and proper labeling
  5. Collecting, segregating, and packaging waste chemicals for disposal efficiently and compliantly
  6. Executing jobs at customer locations, including Fortune 500 companies
  7. Final preparation and approval of all projects before shipment, in accordance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company policies
  8. Conducting projects/jobs following site-specific regulations and safety plans
  9. Understanding and adhering to customer-specific disposal restrictions and packaging requirements
  10. Sampling and profiling new waste streams or wastes needing analytical testing
  11. Verifying drum counts and conditions for shippability
  12. Following all local, state, and federal regulations and rules
  13. Safely operating vehicles per U.S. DOT and local requirements
  14. Observing all company environmental, health, safety, and operational guidelines
  15. Performing other duties as assigned
Minimum requirements:
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with hazmat and tanker endorsements within 6 months (if applicable)
  • Ability to perform physical functions required by the job
  • Successful completion of background check, drug test, and physical (if applicable)
  • Compliance with OSHA's facial hair standards for positions requiring respirators
Preferred qualifications:
  • College degree in Chemistry or Natural Science
  • Experience in Environmental Services such as remediation, abatement, or spill response

This entry-level position offers a pathway to management and other roles within Clean Harbors, with opportunities for advancement after approximately 18 to 36 months. We support military transitioning personnel and provide comprehensive training to ensure success in your career with us.
