The Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences (DMCS) at Rutgers University–New Brunswick is seeking an Instructor to teach an online 3-credit undergraduate course, “Introduction to Oceanography”, Course #: 11:628:120:90, during Winter Session 2027 (December 23, 2026 – January 15, 2027), and Summer Session 2027 which has 2 sessions (May 24, 2027-June 17, 2027 & July 6, 2027- July 30, 2027).
This fully online course introduces undergraduate students to the fundamental concepts and interdisciplinary nature of oceanography, emphasizing large-scale Earth–ocean processes and system interactions. Students explore the geological, physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the ocean and how these disciplines interconnect to shape marine environments and influence global systems.
The course is offered in both Winter and Summer Sessions, conducted entirely online through Rutgers’ Canvas learning management system. Instruction combines multimedia content, readings, virtual discussions, and applied exercises to engage students in oceanographic concepts and methods.
Appointment is contingent upon successful completion of all pre-employment screening, and sufficient enrollment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position is fully remoteand requires the ability to teach, communicate, and manage course materials in an online learning environment. The instructor must have reliable access to a computer, stable internet connection, and proficiency in using Canvas (Rutgers’ learning management system), email, and video-conferencing tools.
Work is performed independently, requiring extended periods of computer use and online engagement with students.
This course is offered through the Rutgers University–New Brunswick Office of Summer and Winter Sessions and administered by the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences (DMCS) within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS), Cook Campus in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Instruction is conducted fully online, and no on-campus presence is required. The instructor is expected to be available virtually for student communication, online office hours, and coordination with DMCS and the Office of Summer & Winter Sessions during the session period (December 23, 2026-January 15, 2027 & May 24-July 30, 2027)
