Job summary

Elgin Family Eyecare is seeking an Optometric Technician to support Optometrists with patient care and education, ensuring efficient, high‑quality experiences from start to finish.

You will perform pre‑testing, assist with diagnostic tests, manage schedules, and help with medical documentation while maintaining patient privacy and compliance. Strong communication and teamwork are essential in a fast‑paced, patient‑focused environment.

Qualifications

• Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications.
• Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment.
• Experience maintaining patients’ records / files per HIPAA regulations.
• Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT).

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
• Assist with specialty diagnostic testing and post‑exam tasks.
• Manage the doctor’s appointment schedule for efficient, high‑quality patient experiences.
• Record and maintain patient records in EHR per policies; check CPT codes and billings.
• Respond to patient inquiries regarding medications and treatment; refer as needed.
• Help with clerical duties related to medical documentation and referrals.
• Support pre‑appointment confirmations and recall outreach to optimize schedule utilization.
• May conduct contact lens insertions/removals and manage inventory and orders.
• Perform end‑of‑day wrap‑up and keep the practice clean and organized.
• Possibly act as a scribe or assist with refractions as needed.
