At Courier Newsroom, we’re reinventing local media to inform and empower communities through impactful reporting. Our mission is rooted in civic engagement and equity—and we’re growing fast.

We are currently recruiting for a Video Director to lead the development and execution of compelling, short-form news video content across our local properties. This role is pivotal in shaping our visual storytelling, ensuring high-impact, social-first videos that drive engagement and inform communities about the news and policies that matter most.

You will report to the Head of Creative and collaborate across editorial, social, and design teams to produce timely, high-performing video content optimized for digital platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, storyboard, and produce engaging, original video content aligned with editorial priorities and breaking news
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to develop narratives and scripts that work seamlessly in the fast-paced, visual world of social media
  • Manage and evolve repeatable video formats that are consistent across multiple properties, while pushing creative boundaries to keep content fresh and relevant
  • Work with editorial teams and own final cuts of video content
  • Supervise junior editors, freelancers, and content contributors—providing clear creative direction and editorial feedback
  • Partner with social media strategists to track video performance and optimize for engagement, retention, and reach
  • Build workflows for rapid-turnaround video production, especially during breaking news and high-impact news cycles
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, formats, and creative tools in social video and news content
  • On occasion, direct and produce original shoots including interviews, field reporting, and live event coverage

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • 5-7 years of experience in video editing and production, preferably in news, digital media, or social storytelling
  • Mastery of Adobe Premiere Pro and strong working knowledge of After Effects, motion graphics, Adobe Creative Suite, and social-friendly animation
  • Deep understanding of news storytelling, video journalism ethics, and how to frame complex issues in digestible, impactful ways
  • Proven track record of developing successful content for TikTok, Meta, YouTube, Reels, Shorts, and other mobile-first platforms
  • Strong leadership and communication skills; ability to give and receive feedback in a collaborative editorial environment
  • A keen eye for visuals, pacing, sound design, and storytelling with a social-first lens
  • Thrives in a fast paced environment

Bonus Points

  • Experience with on-camera talent development
  • Familiarity with live streaming and interactive video formats
  • Knowledge of distribution strategies for video content
