Veterinary Technician Shift Lead (RVT)

Location: Durham North, 1720 North Pointe Dr., Durham, NC 27705

Pay Range: $23.43 to $33.84 per hour. Sign‑on bonus may be offered for the initial period.

Job Purpose

As a Veterinary Technician, you will work alongside pet health care industry experts to make a difference in the lives of the pets and clients we serve. Responsibilities
  • Recruit new clients by promoting hospital services, Optimum Wellness Plans, preventative care, and pet health needs.
  • Route the flow of clients and pets to ensure superior client care and maximum productivity of the veterinary medical team.
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service, including welcoming clients and pets, ensuring comfort, and educating them about pet health.
  • Perform or prepare procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance; complete preparatory work for other procedures; monitor hospitalized or surgical pets.
  • Conduct veterinary technician appointments under the direction and supervision of a veterinarian and in compliance with state law.
  • Assist incoming clients by completing required documentation, entering pet information and history in the computer, identifying pets with collars and tags, and ensuring prompt service.
  • Assist outgoing clients by providing instructions, information, invoices, dispensing prescription items, selling retail products, and scheduling future appointments.
  • Maintain accurate financial balances and utilize proper opening and closing procedures.
  • Serve as a supportive resource for the veterinarian, maintaining the flow of patients and communicating with associates.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain complete medical charts.
  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques and following standard protocols.
  • Maintain clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
  • Assist with surgery as applicable.
  • Train and mentor new paraprofessional associates.
  • Quality‑check medical records, go‑home medications, regulatory documentation, hospital cleanliness, and timeliness of doctors seeing exam room patients.
  • Use technical skills within state practice acts for credentialed veterinary technicians.
  • Perform administrative functions as necessary.
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Assist the Practice Manager in developing an efficient, productive hospital team that delivers high‑quality care and service.
  • Support practice management, labor management, and day‑to‑day supervision of the paraprofessional team.
  • Create an environment that allows a team to deliver quality, efficient, and effective veterinary care.
  • Provide effective communication between associates, clients, hospital leadership, and central team support.
  • Ensure all hospital associates adhere to Banfield dress and grooming guidelines.
  • Prepare the team on cases scheduled for the day, assist with transfers of cases from the day before or external referrals, and triage the treatment board.
  • Identify potential bottlenecks and formulate solutions to remove barriers in medical operations.
  • Assist in client resolution decisions, invoice adjustments, and client experience exceptions.
  • Address broken equipment issues and assist with inventory management.
  • Assist with financial management and maintain accurate balances with proper opening and closing procedures.
  • Quality‑check medical records, go‑home medications, regulatory documentation, hospital cleanliness, and timeliness of doctors seeing exam room patients.
Requirements
